Este informe presenta los resultados del cuarto inventario forestal de las islas del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico. El área de bosque en la isla grande de Puerto Rico se mantuvo constante o aumentó ligeramente del año 2004 al 2009. Este cambio parece indicar que la tasa de incremento de cubierta forestal en la isla grande de Puerto Rico ha disminuido desde que el inventario forestal comenzó en 1980. Tanto Culebra como Vieques pudieron haber experimentado una pérdida leve en cubierta forestal. Sin embargo, los errores de muestreo son lo suficientemente amplios como para abarcar estos pequeños cambios en la cubierta forestal, por lo que es mejor indicar que la cubierta forestal se mantuvo relativamente estable desde el año 2004 hasta el 2009. La cobertura forestal según las regiones administrativas del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA) y la zona cafetalera en 2004 y 2009 refleja el patrón general de estabilidad que se observa a nivel isla. La distribución diamétrica del total de árboles confirma el hecho de que la mayoría de los bosques en Puerto Rico son de edad relativamente joven. Especies nativas e introducidas naturalizadas cohabitan en los bosques y un total de 298 especies fueron encontradas en las parcelas de inventario forestal medidas. Las especies más importantes no han cambiado mucho desde el inventario anterior. Hay 35.6 millones de metros cúbicos (1.28 billones de pies cúbicos) de madera comerciable en los bosques de Puerto Rico, de los cuales el 86 por ciento se encuentra en terrenos privados. Las maderas utilizadas comúnmente para hacer muebles y artesanía en Puerto Rico reflejan un rango de 0.2 a 2.6 millones de metros cúbicos (6.2 a 90.9 millones de pies cúbicos). El total de árboles frutales comunes asciende a 5.1 millones de individuos. Hay 49.0 millones de megagramos de biomasa aérea y subterránea en árboles vivos, lo que representa aproximadamente 24.5 millones de megagramos de carbono o las emisiones anuales de 8.2 veces el número total de automóviles en Puerto Rico. Los árboles en los bosques crecieron cerca de 1.9 millones de metros cúbicos cada año pero perdieron 895,785 metros cúbicos al año debido a mortalidad natural y otros 2,408 metros cúbicos debido a remociones, lo que resulta en un promedio de ganancia anual neta de 962,749 metros cúbicos entre el periodo de 2004 a 2009. Menos del 2 por ciento de los árboles evaluados en las parcelas de monitoreo de salud forestal mostró señales de muerte regresiva.

Nontimber forest products (NTFPs) are fundamental to the functioning of healthy forests and play vital roles in the cultures and economies of the people of the United States. However, these plants and fungi used for food, medicine, and other purposes have not been fully incorporated into management, policy, and resource valuation. This report is a forest-sectorwide assessment of the state of the knowledge regarding NTFPs science and management information for U.S. forests and rangelands (and hereafter referred to as the NTFP assessment). The NTFP assessment serves as a baseline science synthesis and provides information for managing nontimber forest resources in the United States. In addition, this NTFP assessment provides information for national-level reporting on natural capital and the ecosystem services NTFPs provide. The report also provides technical input to the 2017 National Climate Assessment (NCA) under development by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).

USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.

National forest inventories (NFIs) are one of the main sources of forest information. This book describes the importance and history of NFIs in Latin America and the Caribbean, a region that is particularly relevant due to the extension and biodiversity of its forests. Methodologies for data collection and measurement of the most relevant indicators in 21 countries are addressed. In addition, similarities and differences in IFN designs, challenges and opportunities, and prospects for the future are examined. This analysis demonstrates that the information generated by the countries is diverse and must be harmonized to meet the commitments and opportunities for sustainable forest management in the 21st century. This publication represents a milestone in the beginning of the harmonization process towards data transparency within the forestry sector in Latin America and the Caribbean and constitutes the first collaborative effort of a network of NFI experts and collaborators in the region.

This Special Issue looks forward as well as backward to best analyze the forest conservation challenges of the Caribbean. This is made possible by 75 years of research and applications by the United States Department of Agriculture, International Institute of Tropical Forestry (the Institute) of Puerto Rico. It transforms Holocene-based scientific paradigms of the tropics into Anthropocene applications and outlooks of wilderness, managed forests, and urban environments. This volume showcases how the focus of the Institute’s programs is evolving to support sustainable tropical forest conservation despite uncertain conditions. The manuscripts showcased here highlight the importance of shared stewardship and a long-term, hands-on approach to conservation, research programs, and novel organizations intended to meet contemporary conservation challenges. Policies relevant to the Anthropocene, as well as the use of experiments to anticipate future responses of tropical forests to global warming, are reexamined in these pages. Urban topics include how cities can co-produce new knowledge to spark sustainable and resilient transformations. Long-term results and research applications of topics such as soil biota, migratory birds, tropical vegetation, substrate chemistry, and the tropical carbon cycle are also described in the volume. Moreover, the question of how to best use land on a tropical island is addressed. This volume is intended to be of interest to all actors involved in long-term sustainable forest management and research in light of the historical lessons and future directions that may come out of a better understanding of tropical cities and forests in the Anthropocene epoch.

An expansive and detailed review of the biology of Caribbean amphibians, considering their threats, conservation and outlook in a changing world. Amphibians are the group of vertebrates undergoing the fastest rate of extinction; it is urgent that we understand the causes of this and find means of protecting them. This landmark illustrated volume brings together the leading experts in the field. As well as offering an overview of the region as a whole, individual chapters are devoted to each island or island-group and the measures used to protect their amphibians through legislation or nature reserves.
