Excerpt from Littledale, Vol. 2 of 3 Silas pod was domiciled at the Vicarage. He had a very anxious look about the eyes; his hair had apparently grown more grey, but not with years. He felt he was one too many, so he often told him self, but it was not his fault. He looked back over his own life, so lonely and drear. Her beauty and refined appear ance had effected what no arguments could have done. So in the morning he stopped the vicar. Excerpt from Littledale, Vol. 3 of 3 Higgs being despatched, arrived at the closed shop bearing his undertaking face, which was a mask incapable of a smile, the eyes being cast up, the hands frequently clasped, and the thumbs turned up to match the eyes. He knocked softly, and Jane admitted him. He slightly frowned; her eyes were red, and she was not one of the family, and, besides, would be given a black dress most likely. If that sort of thing was common, the business of undertaker and sympathizing ghoul would fall into disrepute, and who could tell the evils that might ensue? People might gather their kindred to the earth without useless hat bands and tawdry scarfs, only followed by their friends and relations in decent everyday attire. Excerpt from Hidden Links, or the Schoolfellows, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale Harry was, in fact, lengthening the Christ mas holidays into a long vacation, and he was every day expecting a letter from his father to desire him to return to London. Mr. Montague had not objected to his son's prolonging his stay in Leamington beyond the holidays, for when his aunt, with whom Harry was an especial favourite, begged that he might remain a few weeks, the knowledge that the old lady possessed a very comfortable income, derived from the three per cents, and entirely at her own dis posal, proved a strong inducement with Mr. Montague, the father of a large family, to grant the request. So Montague had very naturally and cheer fully made up his mind to absent himself from his legal pursuits until he Should receive a hint to resume them; and the time passed pleasant] y and, perhaps, rather too quickly. Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices.
