For public and school libraries, this resource reflects recent changes in Library of Congress subject headings and authority files, and provides bilingual information essential to reference librarians and catalogers serving Spanish speakers. Libraries must provide better access to their collections for all users, including Spanish-language materials. The American Library Association has recognized this increasing need. Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries: Bilingual Fourth Edition is the only resource available that provides both authorized and reference entries in English and Spanish. A first-check source for the most frequently used headings needed in school and public libraries, this book incorporates thousands of new and revised entries to assist in applying LCSH and CSH headings. Of the approximately 30,000 headings listed, most include cross-references, and all of the cross-reference terms are translated. MARC21 tags are included for all authorized entries to simplify entering them into computerized catalogs, while indexes to all headings and free-floating subdivisions are provided in translation from Spanish to English. This book gives librarians access to accurate translations of the subject terms printed in books published and cataloged in English-speaking countries—invaluable information in settings with Spanish-speaking patrons.

As part of an effort to formulate a list of principles underlying subject heading languages used in various subject access systems throughout the world, IFLA's Lisbon Satellite Meeting reviewed a broad spectrum of national systems and considered current issues in their development. By examining programs developed in Brazil, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S., the papers help to identify which principles each system considers fundamental and implicit and which had to be stated explicitly in usage instructions or subject heading codes. More general topics such as "International Tendencies in Terminology and Indexing" were also addressed.

The amazing progress in technology has profoundly affected the way we handle & access multilingual & multiscript library materials--an issue of growing importance as the world becomes smaller & user populations grow ever more diverse. These proceedings reflect the progress made in realizing the 'Global Village Library' since the first meeting was held in Tokyo in 1986. From the technical aspects involved in creating a multilingual automated thesaurus to the future of world wide networking, topics of theoretical & practical concern are treated. The papers are grouped into five broad subjects--Overviews of the Field; Multilingual & Multiscript Applications; Advances in Character Sets & Networking; Multilingual & Multiscript Bibliographic Systems; & Summing Up. The tenor of the discussion is overwhelmingly positive, reflecting a marked improvement in patron services & access.
