Based on extensive interviews and archival material, The First Wave tells the story of the opposition in Singapore in its critical first thirty years in Parliament. Democratisation has been described to occur in waves. The first wave of a democratic awakening in post-independence Singapore began with J. B. Jeyaretnam’s victory in the Anson by-election of 1981. That built up to the 1984 general election, the first of many to be called a “watershed”, in which Chiam See Tong was also elected in Potong Pasir. After their successes in 1991, the opposition began dreaming of forming the government. But their euphoria was short-lived. Serious fault lines in the leading Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) rose to the surface almost immediately after the opposition victories of 1991, and the party was wiped out of Parliament by 1997. The opposition spent the next decade experimenting with coalition arrangements, to work their way back to victory.

This new interpretation of the early history of Chinese argues that Old Chinese was typologically a 'mixed' language. It shows that, though its dominant word order was subject-verb-object, this coexisted with subject-object-verb. Professor Xu demonstrates that Old Chinese was not the analytic language it has usually been assumed to be, and that it employed morphological and lexical devices as well as syntactic means. She describes the typological changes that have taken place sincethe Han period and shows how Chinese evolved into a more analytic language, supporting her exposition with abundant examples. A new mapping provides insight into a number of risk factors, which include excessive use of digital media, loneliness and various social conditions. Protective factors include good relationships in school and physical activity. The paper contributes to an overview of the Nordic countries’ organisation of efforts aimed at children and young people in mental distress, including a description of the cross-sectoral collaboration between the healthcare and social services sectors in each of the Nordic countries. The division of responsibilities between the healthcare and social services sectors differs among the Nordic countries. The Nordic countries are divided into regions and municipalities which are responsible in different ways for young people in mental distress. As the division of responsibilities differs between the countries, the cross-sectoral collaboration within them does as well.
