Les études de cet ouvrage illustrent l’équilibre toujours changeant que les sociétés démocratiques doivent trouver entre deux logiques sociales opposées : celle qui voit dans l’individu le fondement des valeurs d’autonomie et de pluralisme, et celle qui rappelle que l’individu est toujours le produit d’un milieu sociohistorique particulier et qu’il a des responsabilités comme citoyen. Les termes individu et citoyen renvoient aux deux logiques à l’œuvre dans les sociétés démocratiques. La logique universaliste, d’une part, ne cesse d’approfondir les exigences d’autonomie des sujets et de pluralisme des institutions. La logique particulariste, d’autre part, rappelle que l’individu est toujours le produit d’un milieu sociohistorique particulier et que le processus d’individuation est le résultat même de la constitution de l’État moderne. La tension entre ces deux logiques est au cœur des études de cet ouvrage qui illustrent sur quels équilibres se constitue la synthèse concrète et changeante de la société moderne.

Sur ces bases, il dégage un concept de « Communauté populaire » visant à prendre le relais des notions de « Classe sociale » ou de « Société ».

S’engager fait toujours sens, peut-têtre même plus encore qu’avant, dans notre « société d’individus ». Cet essai solidement étayé le montre, apportant un utile démenti aux discours convenus de dénonciation de la « montée des égoïsmes » et aux exhortations rhétoriques au « sursaut de citoyenneté ». Les individus sont en effet plus nombreux, notamment parmi les jeunes et surtout les femmes, à s’associer, à se mobiliser, à intervenir dans l’espace public. Mais ils le font selon de nouvelles modalités, qui s’écartent notablement des schémas du militantisme d’antan. Plus autonomes par rapport à leurs milieux d’appartenance, plus soucieux de faire entendre leur parole propre, plus réflexifs, délivrés de toute révérence obligée envers les puissants et les experts, ces nouveaux militants déroutent parfois... Le fonctionnement de la vie associative, les pratiques protestataires et la citoyenneté s’en trouvent modifiés. Appuyé sur des travaux d’enquête et une analyse très fine des engagements politiques et associatifs, cet ouvrage saisit un rapport au politique complexe et diffus, moins focalisé sur les élections et le mythe du grand soir. What is the relationship between migration and politics in Quebec? How did French Canadians’ activities in the global south influence future debates about migration and Quebec society? How did migrants, in turn, shape debates about language, class, nationalism and sexuality? A Place in the Sun explores these questions through overlapping histories of Quebec and Haiti. From the 1930s to the 1950s, French-Canadian and Haitian cultural and political elites developed close intellectual bonds and large numbers of French-Canadian missionaries began working in the country. Through these encounters, French-Canadian intellectual and religious figures developed an image of Haiti that would circulate widely throughout Quebec and have ongoing cultural ramifications. After first exploring French-Canadian views of Haiti, Sean Mills reverses the perspective by looking at the many ways that Haitian migrants intervened in and shaped Quebec society. As the most significant group seen to integrate into francophone Quebec, Haitian migrants introduced new perspectives into a changing public sphere during decades of political turbulence. By turning his attention to the ideas and activities of Haitian taxi drivers, exiled priests, aspiring authors, dissident intellectuals, and feminist activists, Mills reconsiders the historical actors of Quebec intellectual and political life, and challenges the traditional tendency to view migrants as peripheral to Quebec history. Ranging from political economy to discussions about sexuality, A Place in the Sun demonstrates the ways in which Haitian migrants opened new debates, exposed new tensions, and forever altered Quebec society.

This Fall 2009 (VII, 4) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge entitled “Migrating Identities and Perspectives: Latin America and the Caribbean in Local and Global Contexts,” focuses on the complexity of identity formations experienced by migrants in the world-system, with a regional focus on Latin America and the Caribbean which have been at the heart of many recent scholarly debates in migration studies and the subsequent emergence of transnationalism. The collection can be therefore understood as an attempt to establish an intellectual dialogue between different academic disciplines, as well as theoretical perspectives. Among the various themes of this issue is the importance of context, as illustrated through the use of comparisons, and the application to the domestic migration context of theoretical approaches commonly used to explain international migration. Another theme that emerges among these papers is that of integration, or in the case of deportees—a very specific group of immigrants—reintegration. A crucial aspect of incorporation is identity formation, often central to migration research and highlighted in a variety of ways in the papers.
