Liber amicorum H. R. Woudhuysen: a Bibliographical Tribute is a Festschrift for Henry Woudhuysen, one of the most senior and influential early modernists, book historians, and scholarly editors of his day, who retires as Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, in 2024. It brings together essays by friends and colleagues spanning some 500 years of literary history, with a strong focus on texts and the people who produce them.

This book is a collection of essays by current scholars spanning a range of topics and time periods that reflect the interests of Henry Woudhuysen. Topics cluster around textual production and the labour required to turn 'raw' literary materials into consumable books, whether for original audiences or, through editing, for a modern readership.

James Doelman's book is the first major study on the Renaissance English epigram since 1947. It combines thorough description of the genre's history and conventions with consideration of the rootedness of individual epigrams within specific social, political and religious contexts.

Following the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire, local Christian leaders were confronted with the problem of how to conceptualize and administer their regional churches. As Gregory Halfond shows, the bishops of post-Roman Gaul oversaw a transformation in the relationship between church and state. He shows that by constituting themselves as a corporate body, the Gallic episcopate was able to wield significant political influence on local, regional, and kingdom-wide scales. Gallo-Frankish bishops were conscious of their corporate membership in an exclusive order, the rights and responsibilities of which were consistently being redefined and subsequently expressed through liturgy, dress, physical space, preaching, and association with cults of sanctity. But as Halfond demonstrates, individual bishops, motivated by the promise of royal patronage to provide various forms of service to the court, often struggled, sometimes unsuccessfully, to balance their competing loyalties. However, even the resulting conflicts between individual bishops did not, he shows, fundamentally undermine the Gallo-Frankish episcopate's corporate identity or integrity. Ultimately, Halfond provides a far more subtle and sophisticated understanding of church-state relations across the early medieval period.

This is a reference work by an international team of scholars covering the book from ancient times to the present day. Introductory essays explore the history and technology of the book and the range of genres. It provides surveys of the book around the world which are followed by over 5,000 A-Z entries.

Perhaps more than any other kind of book, manuscript miscellanies require a complex and ‘material’ reading strategy. This collection of essays engages the renewed and expanding interest in early modern English miscellanies, anthologies, and other compilations. Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England models and refines the study of these complicated collections. Several of its contributors question and redefine the terms we use to describe miscellanies and anthologies. Two senior scholars correct the misidentification of a scribe and, in so doing, uncover evidence of a Catholic, probably Jesuit, priest and community in a trio of manuscripts. Additional contributors show compilers interpreting, attributing, and arranging texts, as well as passively accepting others’ editorial decisions. While manuscript verse miscellanies remain appropriately central to the collection, several essays also involve print and prose, ranging from letters to sermons and even political prophesies. Using extensive textual and bibliographical evidence, the collection offers stimulating new readings of literature, politics, and religion in the early modern period, and promises to make important interventions in academic studies of the history of the book.
