This volume in honour of Ingrid Meyer is a tribute to her work in the interrelated fields of lexicography, terminology and translation. One key thing shared by these fields is that they all deal with text. Accordingly, the essays in this collection are united by the fact that they too are all "text-based" in some way. In the majority of essays, electronic corpora serve as the textual basis for investigations. Chapters focusing on electronic corpora include a description of a tool that can be used to help build specialized corpora in a semi-automatic fashion; corpus-based investigations of terminological knowledge patterns, terminological implantation, lexicographic information and translation solutions; comparisons of corpora to conventional resources such as dictionaries; and analyses of corpus processing tools such as translation memory systems. In several essays, notably those dealing with historical or literary documents, the texts in question are specific manuscripts that have been studied with a view to learning more about lexicographic and translation practice. The present book contains a collection of works devoted to current trends in theoretical and practical lexicography, terminology and terminography. All papers are divided into two main sections. Part I: Lexicography deals with analysis of historical and typological problems in lexicography with special reference to English, Italian, Russian and Southern African dictionaries for general- and special- purposes. The main focus is given to the description of principles in lexicographic presentation of non-equivalent lexics, rhyming slang, idioms, clichés and gender nominations of people in bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. Part II: Terminology and Terminography is devoted to description of the current tendencies observed in terminology and terminography studies with special reference to modern European languages such as English, Russian, Norwegian, etc. Terms of different special domains are viewed from the angle of the latest achievements of modern science, cognitive linguistics in particular. It reveals specific features of terminological word-combinations, terms in colloquial use, peculiarities of terms belonging to newly formed Languages for Special purposes, typical features of recently appeared LSPs and presentations of new dictionaries’ projects of different subject areas. This part reveals international nature of current tendencies in terminology studies and shows the national ways of their functioning and presentation in special dictionaries.

While lexicology, lexical semantics, and lexicography all share an interest in lexical items, they often tend to be regarded as three separate albeit interrelated fields. Indeed, the extent to which the interrelationship is recognized and taken into account in lexicographic practice is the moot point. The conference which produced the papers offered in this volume was designed to bring their practioners together and thus gives an impetus to closer cooperation among them, It is the editors' conviction that the practical activity of lexicography should learn more from its sister fields. People working in lexicography, lexical semantics, etc. may find some of the insights arrived at in the more practically oriented descriptions pertinent and useful.
