What are Canada’s various links with international development and globalization? They extend beyond foreign aid to diplomacy, trade, finance, aid, immigration, military intervention (both peacekeeping and combat roles), membership in a variety of international organizations, relations with indigenous peoples, and people-to-people links. This multi-disciplinary and multi-author textbook, designed for first- or second-year students, introduces the main concepts, theories, and perspectives that have shaped Canada’s interactions with developing countries in a globalizing world. It starts by considering Canada as a case study in international development and globalization. It examines Canada’s diplomatic, economic, military, social, immigration and aid policies, how they have changed over time and how they have interacted with each other and with Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples. The book presents economic, political, and cultural dimensions of the process of globalization and the ways they affect Canada; examines the public institutions, private sector and civil society organizations in Canada; and explores the moral imperatives behind Canadian international policy. Finally, it examines current issues, including Canada’s promotion of human rights, democracy, good governance, support to the private sector, and relations with fragile and conflict-affected states and the emerging economies. The objective of CIDA's private sector development (PSD) policy os to create more, better, and decent jobs and sustainable livelihoods by helping markets to function well and by stimulating the growth of the local private sector in developing countries and countries in transition.

The Covid-19 pandemic has aggravated the tension between large development needs in infrastructure and scarce public resources. To alleviate this tension and promote a strong and job-rich recovery from the crisis, Africa needs to mobilize more financing from and to the private sector.

The authors would like to express their appreciation for the contributions of the Steering Group on the Private Sector, who played a key role in shaping the priorities of this research as well as the survey design and key definitions. [...] We would also like to thank the organizations that participated in the pilot stage of the survey for piloting the content and format of the survey and providing us with preliminary data and feedback. [...] Drawing on the results of a comprehensive survey, this report provides a broad overview or map of how the 62 CSOs who responded to the survey2 are currently engaging the private sector, what the key dynamics are of this engagement, and what organizations are planning to do in the future. [...] As such, this report helps illuminate the great depth, variety, and complexity of the different approaches being taken, underscores the vast and diverse experience that Canadian CSOs have in engaging the private sector, and identifies the current and changing priorities of CSOs involved in Canadian international cooperation with respect to engaging the private sector - adding further nuance to the [...] But such partnerships and promotion on the part of CSOs must carefully balance two essential dimensions: the role of the private sector in contributing to positive development outcomes, on the one hand, and keeping corporations accountable to global standards and the law, on the other.

This report examines Canada's current aid policies relating to the role of the private sector in development, including Canada's support for private sector development in developing countries and partnerships with the private sector to achieve development goals.
