When Fort Sumter was attacked in April 1861, hundreds of soldiers were stationed at the U.S. Army’s Camp Floyd, forty miles southwest of Salt Lake City. Sagwitch, "the Speaker," was a leader of the Shoshone people. Following the Bear River Massacre he lead the survivors. He and his band later were baptized as members of the Mormon church and settled the Washakie Indian colony in northern Utah.
