Writer thanks Virgil for the note which explains the gift of a set of his father's poems. Bender has a deep love for Mr. Edwin Markham, the poet, as does the rest of the country. He invites Virgil to stay with them should he get to California.

Bender writes Virgil that he wished to pay tribute to Mrs.Markham on the 16th of December at Roosevelt House. She was a great woman, he writes. Bender encloses a $50.00 for a Christmas present for Mr.Markham. Bender wishes Virgil to visit on the west coast. Time takes it toll on age and Bender, himself, no longer travels.

LeHand, private secretary to F.D.R. writes on behalf of the President thanking Mr. Markham for the copy of "Edwin Markham himself." The President appreciates the kind thoughtfulness.

Bender writes Virgil that he is welcome to stay with Bender during his stay in San Francisco. Bender is also glad to hear that Virgil's music and writing are going so well. "You must have been working rather hard this summer to have two books so far..." he writes.

Markham writes Virgil telling him, that if he(Edwin) should "drop to Death" before completion of his collected poems, then Virgil should go on and complete this. He asks for specific poems such as Man with a Hoe and the Lincoln Ode to be the opening poems. The poem on Poe should also be included.

Writer thanks Virgil for the letter in regards to the failing health of his father, Edwin Markham. Bender tells Virgil that he has been in the hospital and expects to be out within a few days.
