Excerpt from Lessons of the Cross and Passion; Six Lectures: Delivered in Hereford Cathedral During the Week Before Easter, 1869 And we shall find the lesson a very sad one. God grant that we may not have to receive it, now or at any time, as applicable, in its deepest sadness, to ourselves! The Disciples were about to enter into temptation. Satan, as they had been warned at the Table, had desired them, had demanded or beggedl them - even as of old he asked of God the holy Patriarch 2 - that he might sift them as wheat. For the enemy too, like Christa, has his winnowing-fan: and that which in God's hand is trial, is in the devil's hand temptation. Who has not known it? That searching, piercing, exploring process, by which sin finds us out, and compels us to show, in shame perhaps and ignominy, the inherent weakness of the creature, the absolute nothingness of the fallen? It was so with the Disciples that night. They were to be explored, put under the devil's winnowing-fan, that he might separate chafi' from wheat, and show them what they were.
