Excerpt from Lessons in California History The writers of this history have aimed to give each chapter a beginning, a middle and an end. Each topic is complete in itself. An attempt has been made to put some life in the pages by going into details that have a human interest which the formal historical writer would consider more or less trivial. Special emphasis has been placed on the early discoveries by sea and land and the idea has been to correlate the facts of geography and history so this book will furnish material in harmony with such books as "California" and "The Home and Its Relation to the World" by Dr. H. W. Fairbanks. Tourists and students have a special interest in the Spanish historical relationships. Architecture, especially the modern school buildings and private homes, the olive, the orange and the vine and other fruits and even our hospitality, are a part of California's Spanish heritage. The discovery of gold, the American settlements, the building of the great state of California during the past seventy years, are treated by the presentation of types of pioneers and stories of struggles and difficulties of the early settlers. Special emphasis has been placed upon the story of education, the story of literature, the story of the state government and California's contribution to the common wealth, on account of their influence upon the social conditions of our state. An analysis of duties performed in the various divisions of the Police Department of the City of Los Angeles was made during the summer of 1932 by the Bureau of Trade and Industrial Education, State Department of Education, after a series of conferences had led up to the recognition of the need for such an analysis. When all divisions had been covered, more than three thousand distinct types of jobs had been listed and as many items of knowledge required to perform these duties. Conferences were held with several police executives who furnished the necessary technical information for use in the construction of teaching units and lesson plans. The instructional material within this bulletin is meant to be suggestive in character.
