Excerpt from Lessons in Applied Mechanics The present volume consists in great measure of selections from the matter contained in a larger treatise 1 on the same subject, of which it may there fore in a certain sense be described as an abridged edition. The portions selected have, however, been completely rearranged and rewritten in fuller detail with much additional illustration, and the whole con sequently forms a virtually new book, which, being smaller in compass and more elementary in Character, may, it is hoped, serve as an introduction to the larger work, and meet the wants of junior students. Excerpt from Rational and Applied Mechanics This book is written primarily for students entering upon their second collegiate year. Their knowledge of mechanics is limited to what was gained during their study of physics and from practice in laboratory and shop; hence no apology is needed for making matters plain and easy in the first chapters of a work which later on leads up to the Theory of Structures, Internal Stress, Motion under Complicated Conditions, Forms of Energy, and higher Graphics. Excerpt from Elements of Mechanics: Forty Lessons for Beginners in Engineering During the past forty years great advances have been made in the methods of instruction in all branches of applied mechanics, but little or no change has taken place in the manner of presenting the subject of rational mechanics. This elementary volume is an attempt to apply the best methods of applied mechanics to the development of the fundamental principles and methods of rational mechanics. To this end, constant appeals are made to experience, by which alone the laws of mechanics can be established, numerous numerical illustrations are given, many queries and problems are stated as exercises for the student, and a system of units is employed with which every boy is acquainted. The field of rational mechanics is so vast that no book can present more than a part of the same. Even the limited course usually given in engineering colleges is so difficult and appeals so little to the students' experience that few acquire a complete mastery of it. In the opinion of the author there should be given in every engineering college two courses in rational mechanics, an elementary one during the freshman year in which only as much mathematics is employed as is indispensably necessary, and an advanced one after the completion of the course in calculus. Excerpt from Applied Mechanics To Mr. J. W. Barrett the author is deeply indebted for the great care, intelligence, and skill which he has bestowed on the preparation of the illustrations from the author's pencil drawings and sketches. A good and enthusiastic teacher interested in his subject does not as a rule follow strictly any particular text-book, not even if he has written it himself, and many of the best teachers seldom refer to any text-book in their lectures. It is, however, very important that a student should form as good a library of his own as he can afford, and the author of this book hopes that it will not be unworthy of a place in such a library, especially in the initial stages of its formation. Excerpt from Applied Mechanics: An Elementary General Introduction to the Theory of Structures and Machines; With Diagrams, Illustrations, and Examples Or: the author's appointment to lecture on Mechanics in the Royal Naval College, a course of elementary lessons was commenced, based on Raxmx's well-known treatise, with such assistawc as could be obtained from other sources. After some years this course assumed a tolerably permanent form, and it was thought desirable to print it, partly From the inconvenience to students of being exclusively depen dent on an] instruction, and partly from an idea that it might be used'nl to others besides those who were immediately addressed. The place which these lectures occupy in the programme of the College Will be found explained in an Appendix. Excerpt from First Year Work in Applied MechanicsIt is assumed that at every stage of progress the student can by reasonable effort read the book understandingly by himself (always with pencil and paper at hand), so as to be ready to grasp the condi tions of concrete or ideal problems brought up in class, and follow state ments made in the language of mathematics and mechanics. In other words, he must here learn to translate the language of the world of mat ter, motion, and force into mathematical forms. The book is not flooded with easy examples which involve nothing new. The use of Graphical solutions is a characteristic feature. The infinitesimal Calculus is not introduced until Centroids and Centers of Action are reached in Chapter VII. In Chapter IX, fiber stress in a Bent Beam is introduced in order to fully explain the origin and use of the Moment of Inertia of surfaces. The comprehensive study of beams will follow in Chapters XIX-XXI.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
