Son Éminence, non seulement satisfaite d’en faire tomber la responsabilité sur les mahométans, en imputa surtout l’odieux à la religion du Prophète. Ces accusations répétées aussi bien à Paris qu’à Londres et à Bruxelles m’ont inspiré l’idée de faire des recherches sur cette matière dans nos livres sacrés, et je m’estime aujourd’hui très heureux d’être à même de prouver que, loin de considérer l’esclave comme un animal, le Coran recommande aux musulmans de le traiter avec bonté, avec bienveillance, ce que les Européens, même ceux qui habitent l’Orient, sauf de très rares exceptions, ignorent jusqu’à présent. D’ailleurs, pour se faire une idée exacte de la législation d’un pays, il ne sut pas de l’habiter, mais il faut aussi en bien posséder la langue, et, certes, les savants orientalistes remplissant ces conditions sont fort peu nombreux. J’espère que le résultat de mes recherches servira à jeter un rayon de lumière sur cette importante question, à laquelle tout le monde, gouvernements et particuliers, s’intéresse si vivement. »
