Many times there are subjects which demand further explanations and guid ance written about them. Such is the case with SGML, the Standard Generalized Markup Language; and ISO Standard published in October, 1986 under the number 8879. There have been many conferences given on this topic, world-wide, as the interest in SGML exists in Europe, the US, Australia and Japan. This book is the first which contains information not only on ISO 8879 itself, but many helpful hints and ideas on developing SGML, applications and discussions of the current software written to be conforming to the ISO standard. This book presents a collection of revised refereed papers selected from the contributions to the Fifth International Workshop on Computer Aided Systems Theory, EUROCAST '95, held in Innsbruck, Austria in May 1995. The 42 full papers contained have been contributed by CAST theoreticians, tool-makers, designers, and appliers and reflect the full spectrum of activities in the area. The papers are organized in sections on systems theory, design environments, complex systems design, and specific applications.

Nearly 20 years ago, in December 1992, I submitted this research in partial fulfillment of a requirement for my Doctor of Philosophy degree in Security Administration at Southwest University located in Kenner (New Orleans), LA. The title of my research was initially called "Terrorist and Hostile Intelligence Actions Against Computer Resources." Much of what I said 20 years ago still rings true today: the terrorists are getting smarter and the proliferation of viruses and their use by foreign countries and in wartime situations comes to mind. Natural language generation (NLG) is the process wherein computers produce output in readable human languages. Such output takes many forms, including news articles, sports reports, prose fiction, and poetry. These computer-generated texts are often indistinguishable from human-written texts, and they are increasingly prevalent. NLG is here, and it is everywhere. However, readers are often unaware that what they are reading has been computer-generated. This Element considers how NLG conforms to and confronts traditional understandings of authorship and what it means to be a reader. It argues that conventional conceptions of authorship, as well as of reader responsibility, change in instances of NLG. What is the social value of a computer-generated text? What does NLG mean for modern writing, publishing, and reading practices? Can an NLG system be considered an author? This Element explores such question, while presenting a theoretical basis for future studies.
