Leonid Pasternak (1862-1945) was an important Russian artist with a reputation as a fine portraitist. This fully illustrated catalogue raisonne covers much of the best of his oeuvre and contains over 2,000 items. The art historical introduction sets his work in the context of European art, and a biographical sketch has been written in close collaboration with surviving members of the artist's family.

Sergei Rachmaninoff—the last great Russian romantic and arguably the finest pianist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries—wrote 83 songs, which are performed and beloved throughout the world. Like German Lieder and French mélodies, the songs were composed for one singer, accompanied by a piano. In this complete collection, Richard D. Sylvester provides English translations of the songs, along with accurate transliterations of the original texts and detailed commentary. Since Rachmaninoff viewed these "romances" primarily as performances and painstakingly annotated the scores, this volume will be especially valuable for students, scholars, and practitioners of voice and piano.

This first edition is focused on the so-called 'modern' period. It starts with the birth of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, in 1780 in Montauban, who competed for the Prix de Rome in 1800 with his contemporaries; he therefore both witnessed and took part in this turning point in time which opened the gates of the 'modern' period, and which led up to today and contemporary art.
