Excerpt from Lectures in Pastoral Theology Rev. W. McLeod George, the writer of the Foreword for the First Series of these Lectures, passed away on the 29th of September, 1912. In writing this Foreword, it is with the memory of many years as an associate of the author - in the days of his student life in the Seminary, and also during the period of his professorship here. Many fresh from University studies, take chairs as teachers of the on-coming ministry, and knowing naught of the joys and sorrows of Pastoral Care. This teacher had served many years as a pastor, and had gathered to himself the love of an attached people. He was an under-shepherd of the Great Shepherd of the sheep. He was a faithful shepherd; and these Lectures enter into the details of a pastor's life in a way that cannot but be helpful to pastors and people. Excerpt from Lectures on Pastoral Theology The following Lectures have been often delivered in the semi nary with which the author is connected. They might have been retained in manuscript, to be still further repeated and improved. But experience has convinced me that I could better promote the interests of my pupils by putting my Lectures into their hands in the form of a text-book, to be read and pondered and made the subject of conversation in the lecture-room, than by simply calling them together, and repeating the Lectures in 'their hearing. I have wished also to do something for theological students and young ministers generally, into whose hands the printed Lectures may, peradventure, fall. Nor am I altogether without hope that my older ministerial brethren, whose privilege it is to be intrusted with the care of souls. May derive some benefit from the thoughts of one who was for twelve years a pastor like themselves, and who still delights to look back upon those years, as among the most pleas ant, if not the most useful, of his life. Excerpt from Six Lectures on Pastoral Theology: With an Appendix on the Influence of Scientific Training on the Reception of Religious Truth The following Lectures were written for, and delivered to, young University laymen who were contemplating Holy Orders. The Appendix is a dissertation, not a lecture, on a different but kindred subject on which I had been requested to write. The Lectures and Appendix have been written piecemeal, amid the stress of varied and constant work, and this must be the apology for their style. The selection of subjects was partly made for me, as will be seen by reference to the footnote on p. 4. But the treatment of them has been mainly determined by conversation and correspondence for years past with young laymen and clergy. Excerpt from Pastors and Teachers: Six Lectures on Pastoral Theology; Delivered in the Divinity School, Cambridge, in the Year 1902I. They recall us to the principle involved in the practice of infant baptism. The Church does not baptise infants indiscriminately. She requires sponsors for their religious education; and the sponsors represent the responsibility of the Church for the infants who are being baptised. It is not too much to say that to baptise infants without real provision for their being brought up to know what their religious profession means, tends to degrade a sacrament into a charm. On this point we need the most serious reflection.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pastoral Theology of the New Testament MY object in these lectures is not only to furnish you with definite rules and directions for the discharge of pastoral duty, but more especially to show you how you ought. Yourselves to study and use the Scriptures, in the service of which you are called one day to labour, in the interests of your calling and from its point of view. This is the more important because otherwise theological study moves in the sphere of the abstract, training neither the spiritual nor the mental powers for the life-work of the ministry - that is, for a real and not merely a formal discharge of it. Owing to this defect in their training we find that ministers in the discharge of their professional duty get into habits of work which very often do not go beyond a mechanical routine; alongside of a lifeless theology there arises a.
