This report is the conclusion of the Committee's short, follow-up inquiry following 2005's 'Too Much or Too Little? Changes to the EU Sugar Regime', (HLP 80-I, 2005-06, ISBN 9780104007716) published when reform of the regime was imminent. The Committee wanted to examine the progress of reform and what measures will be necessary in future, prior to the EU finalising its position on this issue in the autumn. After the last set of reforms took place, the price of sugar in the EU decreased. However, this was just for the growers and the producers - the cost to the consumer actually increased, meaning they did not reap the benefits of the decrease in sugar prices. The sugar market has very few significant operators. For consumers primarily, but for the industry too, the pricing process needs clarity and transparency. The Committee believes that an investigation by the UK's Office of Fair Trading would be an excellent way of providing independent advice to the Commission on how the process impacts on UK consumers.Other recommendations include the abolition of production quotas in 2015, that import tariffs on raw and refined sugar are eased and that the European Commission carefully monitors the disbursement of funding set aside to help lessen the impact of the 2006 reforms on developing countries to combat the delays that have been experienced thus far.

God loves us and has a unique blueprint for our life--but it's up to us to find it and live it out. Mingling contemporary stories and biblical anecdotes with practical advice, Silvoso shows how God intervenes in human affairs today to transform people and nations. He also shares five critical paradigms for transformation that are pivotal for change: Discipling Nations, Reclaiming the Marketplace, Looking at Work as Worship, Becoming Salt and Light, and Eliminating Poverty. In these pages, readers will find extraordinary stories about the power of God working through those who discovered their specific purpose. Then they'll be challenged to transform themselves and, by doing so, transform their families, schools, businesses, and nations. Silvoso encourages readers to aim high, knowing that God has entrusted them with great things. "God sees you as a nation transformer," says Silvoso. He has faith in you!

The champion of uncelebrated foods including fat, offal, and bones, Jennifer McLagan turns her attention to a fascinating, underappreciated, and trending topic: bitterness. What do coffee, IPA beer, dark chocolate, and radicchio all have in common? They’re bitter. While some culinary cultures, such as in Italy and parts of Asia, have an inherent appreciation for bitter flavors (think Campari and Chinese bitter melon), little attention has been given to bitterness in North America: we’re much more likely to reach for salty or sweet. However, with a surge in the popularity of craft beers; dark chocolate; coffee; greens like arugula, dandelion, radicchio, and frisée; high-quality olive oil; and cocktails made with Campari and absinthe—all foods and drinks with elements of bitterness—bitter is finally getting its due. In this deep and fascinating exploration of bitter through science, culture, history, and 100 deliciously idiosyncratic recipes—like Cardoon Beef Tagine, White Asparagus with Blood Orange Sauce, and Campari Granita—award-winning author Jennifer McLagan makes a case for this misunderstood flavor and explains how adding a touch of bitter to a dish creates an exciting taste dimension that will bring your cooking to life.
