n his 2019 book, Teaching to the North-East: Relationship-based learning in practice Professor Bishop identified how Māori and other marginalised students-such as the children of migrant, refugee, and faith-based groups and neuro- and gender-diverse children-can benefit from a North-East relationship-based pedagogy. Now in Leading to the North-East, he demonstrates how North-East leaders ensure teachers are able to implement and sustain the North-East relationship-based pedagogy with fidelity. This is done by: setting goals for equity, excellence, and cultural sustainability; implementing a pedagogic approach that ensures these goals are realised; implementing in-school support systems that ensures the pedagogy is implemented with fidelity over time; and taking ownership of the approach by planning, resourcing, and reviewing teaching and school-wide leadership practices to ensure support systems work as intended, over time. The book includes three case studies that demonstrate how this process of reform was able to successfully raise Māori student achievements to match that of their non-Māori peers, enable Māori students to do so "as Māori", and benefit other marginalised students.

"Ennobling Japan’s Savage Northeast is the first comprehensive account in English of the discursive life of the Tōhoku region in postwar Japan from 1945 through 2011. The Northeast became the subject of world attention with the March 2011 triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. But Tōhoku’s history and significance to emic understandings of Japanese self and nationhood remain poorly understood. When Japan embarked on its quest to modernize in the mid-nineteenth century, historical prejudice, contemporary politics, and economic calculation together led the state to marginalize Tōhoku, creating a “backward” region in both fact and image. After 1945, a group of mostly local intellectuals attempted to overcome this image and rehabilitate the Northeast as a source of new national values. This early postwar Tōhoku recuperation movement has proved to be a critical source for the new Kyoto school’s neoconservative valorization of native Japanese identity, fueling that group’s antimodern, anti-Western discourse since the 1980s.Nathan Hopson unravels the contested postwar meanings of Tōhoku to reveal the complex and contradictory ways in which that region has been incorporated into Japan’s shifting self-images since World War II."

Sustainable Peace in Northeast Asia examines the causes of lasting and complex tensions in the region from underlying political, historical, military and economic perspectives; discusses their historical development and political-economic implications for the world; and explores possible solutions to build lasting peace. In many senses, India's Northeast has been an enigma to the rest of the country. Beginning with the earliest challenge of the nation-building process in India, this highly diverse and multicultural region has, through its multiple identity movements and militant separatism, thrown up several major issues which have resulted in re-drawing the parameters of the Indian nation-state and helped to re-define the idea of nationalism itself.
