This book offers a comprehensive presentation of the Pratyabhijñā philosophy (elaborated in the 10th and 11th centuries by Utpaladeva and Abhinavagupta) by showing how its main concepts arose from the confrontation of Śaiva religious dogmas with Buddhist and Brahmanical systems. Devenue libre et moderne, l'Australie n'en demeure pas moins une nation hantée par un passé qu'obscurcit la non-reconnaissance de l'Autre aborigène. Hantée par l'illusion de la Terra nullius - cet espace vierge originel où doivent nécessairement s'exercer les prérogatives de l'envahisseur européen -, l'Australie cherche des moyens, légaux, sociaux, culturels, d'accomplir une réconciliation dont dépend en grande partie le sentiment d'une appartenance et d'une identité nationales. Depuis que les Jeux olympiques de Sydney ont soudain braqué l'attention sur elle, I'Australie cherche à offrir à son propre peuple et au reste du monde un visage apaisé, démythifié, débarrassé des fantasmes qu'avait projetés sur elle l' Europe, depuis la découverte. A cet égard, ce volume propose des regards avisés et originaux sur l'Australie contemporaine, rassemblés autour d'un thème qui explore la conscience de soi des Australiens confrontés à la nécessité de rompre l'isolement où les a contraints la géographie et où les a précipités l'histoire du peuplement continental. Des signes d'espoir sont néanmoins visibles : l'Australie en devenir est une terre vouée à unifier plutôt qu'à exclure, à accueillir plutôt qu'à rejeter, tout en préservant ses chances de construire une identité sociale et culturelle durable.

In the context of cultural and economic globalization, intercultural communication is of central importance for the study of social and educational processes and practices. This volume contains contributions on conceptual issues as well as case studies on intercultural communication and education in Finland. Some of the contributions were first presented at the conference «Enhancing the Visibility and Collaboration of Researchers in Intercultural Communication and Education in Finland» which took place at the University of Turku, Finland, in October 2004. The other collected articles offer various contrasting perspectives on issues related to interculturality. Dans le contexte de la mondialisation culturelle et économique, la recherche en communication interculturelle est d'une importance capitale pour l'étude des pratiques et des processus sociaux et éducatifs. Les contributions de ce volume relèvent tant du traitement de problèmes conceptuels que de l'étude de cas, réunies autour du thème de la communication et de l'éducation interculturelles en Finlande. Certaines d'entre elles ont été présentées lors de la conférence intitulée « Visibilité et collaboration des chercheurs en communication et en éducation interculturelles en Finlande », qui s'est déroulée en octobre 2004 à l'Université de Turku. D'autres viennent s'ajouter à l'ouvrage, offrant ainsi des éclairages à la fois complémentaires et différents sur les problématiques de l'interculturalité.

The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy tells the story of philosophy in India through a series of exceptional individual acts of philosophical virtuosity. It brings together forty leading international scholars to record the diverse figures, movements, and approaches that constitute philosophy in the geographical region of the Indian subcontinent, a region sometimes nowadays designated South Asia. The volume aims to be ecumenical, drawing from different locales, languages, and literary cultures, inclusive of dissenters, heretics and sceptics, of philosophical ideas in thinkers not themselves primarily philosophers, and reflecting India's north-western borders with the Persianate and Arabic worlds, its north-eastern boundaries with Tibet, Nepal, Ladakh and China, as well as the southern and eastern shores that afford maritime links with the lands of Theravda Buddhism. Indian Philosophy has been written in many languages, including Pali, Prakrit, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Persian, Kannada, Punjabi, Hindi, Tibetan, Arabic and Assamese. From the time of the British colonial occupation, it has also been written in English. It spans philosophy of law, logic, politics, environment and society, but is most strongly associated with wide-ranging discussions in the philosophy of mind and language, epistemology and metaphysics (how we know and what is there to be known), ethics, metaethics and aesthetics, and metaphilosophy. The reach of Indian ideas has been vast, both historically and geographically, and it has been and continues to be a major influence in world philosophy. In the breadth as well as the depth of its philosophical investigation, in the sheer bulk of surviving texts and in the diffusion of its ideas, the philosophical heritage of India easily stands comparison with that of China, Greece, the Latin west, or the Islamic world.

In her Introduction, Tymieniecka states the core theme of the present book sharply: Is culture an excess of nature's prodigious expansiveness - an excess which might turn out to be dangerous for nature itself if it goes too far - or is culture a 'natural', congenial prolongation of nature-life? If the latter, then culture is assimilated into nature and thus would lose its claim to autonomy: its criteria would be superseded by those of nature alone. Of course, nature and culture may both still be seen as being absorbed by the inner powers of specifically human inwardness, on which view, human being, caught in its own transcendence, becomes separated radically in kind from the rest of existence and may not touch even the shadow of reality except through its own prism. Excess, therefore, or prolongation? And on what terms? The relationship between culture and nature in its technical phase demands a new elucidation. Here this is pursued by excavating the root significance of the 'multiple rationalities' of life. In contrast to Husserl, who differentiated living types according to their degree of participation in the world, the phenomenology of life disentangles living types from within the ontopoietic web of life itself. The human creative act reveals itself as the Great Divide of the Logos of Life - a divide that does not separate but harmonizes, thus dispelling both naturalistic and spiritualistic reductionism.
