Afghanistan, 2009. A Rifle section is halfway through their six-month tour of duty in Helmand Province. Sixteen men from their Battalion have already been killed. Forty-seven others have been wounded and flown back home. The last three months have been tough and it shows. Their kit is in a bad way. They are in a bad way. Young men with tans, scruffy beards, peeling noses and lips burnt raw by the Afghan sun. Despite the hardships they are enjoying their time out here learning how to fight the Taleban. The lads are on their way to becoming the best soldiers in the Army. Last Night Another Soldier... is the story of four of the young men in this Rifle section, partly told from the point of view of eighteen-year-old squaddie, David 'Briggsy' Briggs.

This is a genuine diary of a young WWI soldier who tells in vivid detail what he saw, what he did and what he felt as he fought for his country in France. The diary has a preface written in 1922 by Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice in which he maintains that books like these are a much better way to avoid future war than the glorifying histories generally available. He says "Surely our years of sacrifice were vain if the most highly educated people in Europe remain in ignorance of the real nature of war and are open scoffers at the League of Nations."

Atop the Trees, Charlie would wait for us, to take his Bait. Immersed in Water; with Weapons above our heads, slowly we moved, make NO sound or we'd be dead. Our way through Villages we made: Children approached us with Grenades. Charlie would hide everywhere, of our Soldiers, they were scared! The Cong were famous for the Tunnels in the ground, in our Tunnel Rats they were Bound, Armed with only a 45, they left no none alive! The Jungles were full of Tigers and Snakes, our Lives they could take! Those 2 days in the Rear; the Women we had to fear! "5 Dollars GI, Me make You Feel Real Good"! Entice us they would! Inside them; a Razor Blade they would embed, as to make Us Dead! Our Tracers Red, their Tracers Green, in the night they could be seen! To Fight at Night, No Moon light, 'twas a Terrible Fright! Our MOTTO was: NEVER GIVE UP NOR ADMIT DEFEAT! There was No Call for Retreat! As We Charged Into Battle, We would Yell: REMEMBER THE "BLACK HORSE"! WE'LL SEE YOU IN HELL!
