This book deals with recent topics in the field of ion beam cooling. Indications of one-dimensional ordering observed by electron beam cooling of highly charged heavy ion beams, and crystal beams observed by laser cooling at the RFQ storage ring, are presented together with theoretical and computational investigations on these phenomena. The approach to hot ion beam cooling is also discussed, from the viewpoint of application of the beam cooling technique.

This volume contains the proceedings of the third Euroconference on Atomic Phys ics at Accelerators (APAC 2001), with the title Stored Particles and Fundamental Physics. It was held in Aarhus, Denmark, from September 8 to 13 at the Marselis Hotel located near the beach and the Marselis Woods outside Aarhus, but some of the activities took place at the Department of Physics, University of Aarhus. The conference was sponsored by the Commission of the European Union (Contract No. ERBFMMACT980469) and also by the Danish Research Foundation through ACAP (Aarhus Center for Atomic Physics). The meeting was focused on the application of storage rings for atomic physics, and there are two fairly small rings in Aarhus, ASTRID (Aarhus STorage Ring for Ions,Denmark) and ELISA (ELectrostatic Ion Storage ring, Aarhus). The research at these rings has contributed to the strong position of European Science in this field. Both rings are designed according to unique concepts. ASTRID is a dual purpose ring, which half the time stores electrons for the generation of low-energy synchrotron radiation. The storage of negative particles has also been a unique feature for the application of ASTRID as an ion storage ring.

Multiply charged ions have always been in the focus of atomic physics, astrophysics, plasma physics, and theoretical physics. Within the last few years, strong progress has been achieved in the development of ion sources, ion storage rings, ion traps, and methods to cool ions. As a consequence, nowadays, experiments with ensembles of multiply charged ions of brilliant quality are performed in many laboratories. The broad spectrum of the experiments demonstrates that these ions are an extremely versatile tool for investigations in pure and applied physics. It was the aim of this ASI to bring together scientists working in different fields of research with multiply charged ions in order to get an overview of the state of the art, to sound out possibilities for fruitful cooperations, and to discuss perspectives for the future. Accordingly, the programme of the ASI reached from established areas like QED calculations, weak interactions, x-ray astronomy, x-ray lasers, multi photon excitation, heavy-ion induced fusion, and ion-surface interactions up to the very recently opened areas like bound-beta decay, laser and x-ray spectroscopy, and spectrometry of ions in rings and traps, and the interaction of highly charged ions with biological cells. Impressive progress in nearly all of the fields could be reported during the meeting which is documented by the contributions to this volume. The theoretical understand ing of QED and correlation effects in few-electron heavy ions is rapidly developing.

The frontiers of beam research point to increasingly high energy, greater brightness and lower emittance beams with ever-increasing particle species. These demands in turn have triggered a rapidly growing number of beam phenomena that involve quantum effects. Concurrently, the violent accelerations which are becoming available through novel accelerator research may, perhaps, help to investigate fundamental physics associated with general relativity. In view of these exciting developments and the important role they may play in the next century, the world's first conference on the 'Quantum Aspects of Beam Physics', held at Monterey, California, in January 1998, attracted a broad spectrum of experts from beam physics, particle physics, laser science, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and atomic physics. At the end of the meeting, a new term 'quantum beam physics' was coined.This book collects together the excellent reviews and papers on new advances in the field which were presented during the workshop. It should be a valuable reference to all physicists interested in the frontiers of quantum beam physics.
