This book contains more than 300 papers presented at the 28th International Conference on Coastal Engineering, held in Cardiff, Wales, in July 2002. It is divided into five parts: coastal waves; nearshore currents, swash, and long waves; coastal structures; sediment transport; and coastal morphology, beach nourishment, and coastal management. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including theory, numerical and physical modeling, field measurements, case studies, design, and management. During the 1980's, research was being carried out to instrument and monitor the piled foundation beneath one leg of the BP Magnus platform in order to determine the actual loads imposed on the piles and seabed by the structural and environmental forces. This volume brings together the findings and discussions resulting from this research.

Observations of wave motion phenomena in nature are essential, but laboratory studies leading to the evaluation of existing theories may be invaluable as a guide to field observation programs and technique.
