This volume investigates sociolinguistic discourses, identity choices and their representations in postcolonial national and social life, and traces them to the impact of colonial contact. The chapters stitch together current voices and identities emerging within both ex-colonized and ex-colonizer communities as each copes with the social, lingual, cultural, and religious mixes triggered by colonialism. These mixes, reflected in the five thematic parts of the book - 'postcolonial identities', 'nationhood discourses', 'translating the postcolonial', 'living the postcolonial', and 'colonizing the colonizer' - call for deeper investigations of postcolonial communities using emic approaches.

Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: In this essay the various ways through which colonials imposed imperial languages are presented followed by examples of how postcolonial responses on the issue of language might have varied but shared the goal of declaring resistance and reclaiming indigenous identities. In colonial and postcolonial discourse, language has a central role since language has the power to shape people’s perception of the world. Language was used during colonization as a tool which could influence knowledge and understanding in many significant aspects of life such as politics, economics and social environment. However, language has been used by both colonials as a means for establishing their domination but also by post-colonial individuals in order to reclaim their cultural identities after emancipation.

The book's chapters address issues that are important not only in Southern Africa but also in other parts of the world. Although the focus and much of the data on language and identity are Southern African, most of the writers deal with their material in such a way as to locate it within theoretical debates and/or illuminate it with insights from related research in other parts of the world. The collection belongs to the constructivist paradigm and is one of the few works within this line of research. The issue of language and identity examines how language can become symbolic of the individual or group's identity. This aspect of language is explored from a variety of angles exhibiting different methods of investigation, and this - smorgasbord of methods provides ample inspiration for further studies in the field."

This timely volume moves away considerably from traditional topics investigated in studies of multilingualism and linguistic identity to propose new analytical approaches that investigate postcolonial societies from the standpoint of their specific internal structures. The book uses postcolonial multilingual societies as gateways into complex webs of identity construction and group boundary definition, the interplay and functions of oral (indigenous) and written (foreign) languages in multilingual communities, the birth of new diaspora generations at home and abroad, the redefinitions of gender roles, and the impact of linguistic identities on the different nation states focused upon in the contributions. “This book could not be published at a better time. The contributors present informative facts about the complex dynamics of the co-existence of ex-colonial languages with the ancestral languages of their new speakers, and about how, on the one hand, they are embraced by some as socio-economic assets and, on the other, they are treated by others as alienating colonial legacies. The reader will learn about various “ecological” factors that have contributed to the indigenization of English, the maintenance or revitalization of indigenous languages, and the emergence of new cultural identities that foster new forms of linguistic diversity in Asia and Africa. This book is a gold mine of information about postcolonial identity in Africa, Asia, Ireland, and the Americas.” Prof. Salikoko S. This book deals with creolization and pidginization of language, culture and identity and makes use of interdisciplinary approaches developed in the study of the latter. Creolization and pidginization are conceptualized and investigated as specific social processes in the course of which new common languages, socio-cultural practices and identifications are developed under distinct social and political conditions and in different historical and local contexts of diversity. The contributions show that creolization and pidginization are important strategies to deal with identity and difference in a world in which diversity is closely linked with inequalities that relate to specific group memberships, colonial legacies and social norms and values.
