Este libro comprende una recopilación de artículos sobre aspectos diversos de la terminología escritos entre 1992 y 1999. Transmiten el proceso de reflexión de la autora sobre la terminología como disciplina teórica y aplicada después de la redacción del libro que publicó en catalán en 1992, La terminologia: la teoria, els mètodes, les aplicacions. Este proceso de reflexión se inició ante la incomodidad que causaba constatar que la percepción que tenía de la terminología en tanto que materia de estudio y de trabajo aplicado no coincidía en muchos aspectos con los principios de la teoría más ortodoxa, representada básicamente por la escuela vienesa.

"Terminology in Everyday Life" contains a selection of fresh and interesting articles by prominent scholars and practitioners in the field of terminology based on papers presented at an international terminology congress on the impact of terminology on everyday life. The volume brings together theory and practice of terminology and deals with such issues as the growing influence of European English on terminology, terminology on demand, setting up a national terminological infrastructure, the relevance of frames and contextual information for terminology, and standardisation through automated term extraction and editing tools. The book wants to demonstrate that terminology is of everyday importance and is of interest to everyone interested in the theory and practice of terminology, from terminologists to computer specialists to lecturers and students.

En este volumen, que incluye las intervenciones de los profesores Jean-Claude Corbeil, Marcelo Diki-Kidiri y Luis Fernando Lara en el seminario de terminología de la I Escuela de Verano de Terminología organizada por el Instituto Universitario de Lingüística Aplicada de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra, se habla claramente de las falacias e inconsistencias de la uniformización, que se presenta como un estadio natural de comportamiento, ya que ni la visión del mundo, ni siquiera la del mundo especializado, no es uniforme, ni las situaciones sociopolíticas en las que se desarrolla el trabajo terminológico no son idénticas. Esta diversidad supone pues que deben adaptarse las actuaciones terminológicas a las circunstancias propias de cada contexto, así como también seleccionar para la terminología la concepción teórica más adecuada a las actuaciones. \ N

This volume brings together a selection of M. Teresa Cabré’s articles on terminology published after 1999 in journals of diverse nature and scope, many of which are difficult to access; articles in languages other than English are here provided in English translation. As a whole, these articles aim to represent the author’s groundbreaking work on terminology, both from a theoretical as from a methodological and applied point of view. Part I includes texts on three fundamental aspects of terminology as a field of knowledge: Firstly, general articles on the rethinking of proposals made by other authors and on the bases for the formulation of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT). Secondly, articles that deal with the rethinking of the framework of this subject, with emphasis on specialised languages and communication. And thirdly, on the object of study: the terminological unit. Part II includes articles on methodology, international standards, and teaching terminology, and texts that deal with the intersection of terminology with other fields: Documentation, Translation, Neology, and Language Policy.

The aim of this volume is to provide an overview of different theoretical perspectives on Terminology, from Wüster to other initiatives that have emerged since the beginning of the 1990s. The volume also covers important topics which have significantly influenced Terminology and its evolution. These include variation, multidimensionality, conceptual relations, and equivalence, among others. The twenty-two chapters of the volume, all written by acknowledged experts in the field, explore the questions that different approaches seek to answer. They also describe the theoretical and methodological principles that were devised over the years to characterize, analyze, and represent terminological data. The semi-chronological, semi-thematic organization of chapters not only provides readers with a clear vision of the evolution of ideas in Terminology, but also gives them an understanding as to why some of these ideas were initially challenged. In addition to being accessible to readers unfamiliar with the basic theoretical principles in the field, the chapters provide a showcase of current research in the field, the challenges looming on the horizon, and finally future directions in terminological research. By bringing together work that is often disseminated in different forums and written in different languages, this volume provides a unique opportunity to look at how different theoretical approaches to Terminology offer complementary perspectives on terms, concepts and specialized knowledge, and help to further a better understanding of the complex phenomena that terminologists must successfully deal with in their work.

This volume, which was originally published in Terminology 15:1 (2009), presents and reflects on experiences dealing with terminology training, from a theoretical, practical and professional perspective. Terminology is part of the programmes of several (post)graduate courses, such as Translating and Interpreting, Applied Languages, Information Science and other disciplines. Especially terminology practice has changed drastically over the years and training in terminology must adapt to this new reality. Drawing on years of experience in teaching this subject at various academic levels and in diverse ways, we explore what to teach about terminology, how to teach it, how it is learned, what experiences are put into practice with what result, and how to connect the knowledge taught at universities and other institutions to the practical skills that are required from professionals in different areas, e.g. translators, information scientists, knowledge engineers, with respect to their knowledge of terminology.
