El Cardenal Mauro Piacenza es desde el 21 de septiembre de 2013 el penitenciario mayor. Hasta esa fecha ocupó el cargo de Prefecto de la Congregación para el Clero, donde comenzó a trabajar en 1990, y en la que ha sido, sucesivamente, Subsecretario y Secretario, hasta el 7 de octubre de 2010 en que Benedicto XVI lo nombró Prefecto. Nacido en Génova, se ordenó sacerdote en 1969 y ha sido profesor de Derecho y Teología dogmática en la Facultad de Teología del Norte de Italia y en el Instituto de Ciencias Religiosas, así como Juez del Tribunal eclesiástico diocesano y de Liguria. En el año de la fe, organizado por Benedicto XVI en el cincuenta aniversario de la apertura del Concilio Vaticano II, nos ha parecido muy interesante el trabajo del Cardenal Mauro Piacenza comentando el Decreto Prebyterorum ordinis, sobre la vida y el ministerio de los presbíteros. Con un lúcido análisis hecho 50 años después, muestra la intención de los Padres conciliares, la gran visión teológica que el Decreto encierra y las consiguientes certezas que animan a llevar a cabo la misión encomendada por la Iglesia a los sacerdotes. Con gran valor, además, indica los aspectos del Decreto que, de modo particular, no han sido comprendidos o han sido silenciados. Y nos anima a llevar a cabo una relectura de los textos del Concilio, para conseguir vivir auténticamente como hijos del Concilio.
