Como resultado de un diagnóstico de trastorno del espectro autista (TEA) en la familia, sus integrantes, incluyendo los hermanos con desarrollo típico, suelen atravesar por una serie de desafíos, modificaciones y ajustes dentro de este sistema. La investigación consiste en explorar la experiencia de hermanos y hermanas con desarrollo típico (HDT) con un hermano diagnosticado con trastorno del espectro autista (TEA), sus procesos de comunicación, sus interacciones sociales y familiares y el significado que le adscriben estos a esta experiencia. El marco conceptual se compone de: teoría de estadios y sentimientos en la familia por Cunningham y Davis, el modelo biopsicosocial de Engel, el enfoque existencial de Viktor Frankl, así como la teoría psicosocial de Erikson. El estudio estuvo enmarcado en una metodología cualitativa con un enfoque fenomenológico. Participaron 4 hermanos y 3 hermanas de personas diagnosticadas con TEA. El acopio de investigación fue a través de entrevistas a profundidad. Para el análisis e interpretación de la información se utilizaron la triangulación, modelos teóricos, literatura e investigaciones relacionadas al tema de investigación. Se identificaron ocho categorías: futuro incierto, rechazo hacia el hermano con TEA y hacia la familia, adquisición de destrezas y aptitudes, roles, ocio y actividades recreativas familiares, redes de apoyo, experiencia desafiante y manifestación de emociones y sentimientos. Algunas de las conclusiones son las siguientes: ante un diagnóstico como el TEA dentro del sistema familiar, los hermanos y hermanas entrevistados, se enfrentaron a retos, adquirieron destrezas y aptitudes como resultado de sus vivencias, observaron una restructuración en las dinámicas familiares, y requieren de una red de apoyo que los acompañe a lo largo de este caminar. Asimismo, a pesar del desafío que representa la experiencia, para estos hermanos y hermanas, la misma está colmada de mucho amor, felicidad, paz, admiración, orgullo y satisfacción hacia sus hermanos con TEA.
