Comment des éléments différents à l'intérieur d'un énoncé (pronoms et syntagmes nominaux), peuvent-ils renvoyer, dans la réalité non-linguistique, aux mêmes individus ou objets? (Problème central pour le débat actuel sur les rapports entre syntaxe et sémantique.) Les phénomènes logiques de coréférence doivent être intégrés à la syntaxe : tel est le résultat à quoi aboutit la démarche de G. Fauconnier, extension en ce point de la théorie classique de Chomsky, démontrant du même coup l'applicabilité de celle-ci à des faits considérés jusque-là comme rebelles. Un autre résultat de cette recherche : les phénomènes d'accord, si importants dans la syntaxe du français, relèvent du même type d'explication que ceux de coréférence. This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the XII Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL), held in April 1982 at Penn State University. These papers reflect the general state of the art in Romance Linguistics. Some of the studies are theoretical papers that seek to establish general principles based on the analysis of a Romance language, others apply the principles of a particular theory to the solution of a problem in some Romance language, or provide data-oriented descriptions of linguistic phenomena in Romance languages.

This monograph investigates the modular architecture of language through the nature of "uninterpretable" phi-features: person, number, gender, and Case. It provides new tools and evidence for the modular architecture of the human language faculty, a foundational topic of linguistic research. At the same time it develops a new theory for one of the core issues posed by the Minimalist Program: the relationship of syntax to its interfaces and the nature of uninterpretable features. The work sets out to establish a new cross-linguistic phenomenon to study the foregoing, person-governed last-resort repairs, which provides new insights into the nature of ergative/accusative Case and of Case licensing itself. This is the first monograph that explicitly addresses the syntactic vs. morphological status of uninterpretable phi-features and their relationship to interface systems in a similar way, drawing on person-based interactions among arguments as key data-base.
