These volumes contain selected papers from the Second International Conference on Contrastive Semantics and Pragmatics that was held at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, in September 2000. They include papers on negation, temporality, modality, evidentiality, eventualities, grammar and conceptualization, grammaticalization, metaphor, cross-cultural pragmatics and speech acts and the semantics-pragmatics boundary. The International Almanac is the only up to date source for the history of election results in the Western world from their origins to the present. PARTIES AND ELECTIONS IN EUROPE is a comprehensive reference guide to the parliamentary elections and governments in the European countries since 1945, the elections to the European Parliament since 1979 and to all significant political parties in Europe. Listed are more than 1250 parties (currently active parties and dissolved or inactive parties). The guide includes basic data of these parties (founding years, political orientations, affiliations to political parties at European level, political groups in the European Parliament and political internationals) and a chronological summary of their history (name changes, predecessors, mergers and splits).

This volume contains revised and extended versions of a selection of the papers presented at “The Amsterdam Workshop on Language Contact and Creolization.” These studies apply the concept of relexification to creoles as well as other contact languages; highlight the relevance of strategies of second language learning for theories of pidgin/creole genesis; critically discuss the notions levelling (koine formation) and convergence; the relation between types of contact situations and processes of crosslinguistic influence; as well as the linguistic consequences of the social structure of the plantation system. In addition to discussing English-, French-, and Dutch-related creoles, the papers cover a wide range of contact languages spoken throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe. The breadth and coverage makes this an indispensable title for research in the field of contact linguistics.

Cognitive linguistics subsumes diverse theoretical approaches sharing a compatible outlook: namely that language reflects the interaction of social, cultural, psychological, communicative, and functional considerations that can be understood only in the context of cognitive development and processing. The editors have organized 27 papers presented at the Third International Linguistics Conference held in the summer of 1993 in Louvain, Belgium, into six somewhat overlapping groupings off theoretical issues concerning the bridges between generative and cognitive linguistics; lexical semantics and morphology (e.g. Langacker semantics for select Coeur d'Alene prefixes); metaphor (one title is "Why metaphor matters: or linguistics meets the geopolitics of law"); syntax and semantics (focusing on Samoan, Spanish, and Swedish); pragmatics (nominal vs. temporal interpretation); and Holmqvist on computational linguistics.
