What is it that is motivating thousands of people to leave behind the comfort and securities of home, put heavy boots on their feet and a pack on their backs, and head off to walk the route known as the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, following in the footsteps of the hundreds of thousands of people who have walked the Camino down through the centuries? In 2014, Vivianne Flintoff took an extended leave of absence from her place of employment to walk both the Camino de Santiago and the Camino Finisterre. With her husband, Bruce, she began the seven-week, nine-hundred-kilometer (five hundred miles) walk at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France, crossed the Pyrenees, and walked the French route to Santiago de Compostela. Two days later, Vivianne and Bruce put their boots and packs back on and headed off to walk the remaining one hundred kilometers (sixty-eight miles) to Finisterre on the Atlantic Coast, to the beach where legend has it that St. James preached and to where his disciples brought back his decapitated body. In Kiwi on the Camino: A Walk that Changed My Life, Vivianne courageously, honestly, and with humor tells of the pain, (she badly sprained her left ankle just three days before beginning the Camino), fears, anxieties, challenges, fun, and friendships encountered along the Way of St. James. Her life is radically changed at the completion of this epic walk. Viviannes meditations shine light upon her inner criticisms, and gradually, with each step, she lets go of self-judgment and becomes self-compassionate. Vivianne comes to a place of life transformation, where she is no longer prepared to live a highly stressed life. Her journey speaks to the many people struggling to juggle the complex demands that a contemporary life requires.

The Camino de Santiago has been a holy pilgrimage across northern Spain for more than a thousand years. When retired journalist Mike Gardner began walking from St. Jean-Pied-de-Port, in April, 2018, he didn't know if he would make it. The Camino is an extraordinary physical challenge of 800 kilometres, taking pilgrims around five weeks to complete - though the majority fail along the way. Mike believes he was accompanied on his pilgrimage by powerful, supernatural forces. He made friends from all over the world and, he says, they were touched by the hand of God. He met cocaine addicts, alcoholics, reformed alcoholics, pilgrims with millions of pounds, one walker who was so poor his budget was five euros a day, airline pilots, plumbers and one amazing lady from New Zealand, who overcame a lifetime of mental anguish, in one divine moment. Mike says he witnessed four miracles, and enjoyed dozens of experiences that were either the result of mystic forces or coincidences that stretch the laws of statistics way, way beyond breaking point. He acquired two sons, three daughters, three sisters and brothers too numerous to put a figure on. His pilgrimage is the essence of everything that is so wonderful about this unique place - there is nowhere like it on Earth. He originally posted his story every day on the internet, as a blog, where he would record his journey on a mobile phone, late at night, and without notes, exhausted but invigorated and keen to put on record his incredible experiences, while everything was fresh in his mind. It was shared all over the world and by the time he reached Santiago, it was being read by thousands of people. This is his story, updated and improved, with more than 70 photographs - it is entirely truthful, uplifting, poignant and ultimately triumphant.

After surgery and surviving prostate cancer, I decided to embark on my "Camino" and also bring awareness of this nasty cancer to others. This disease kills many men across the World every year some 270,000. This journey lets you rethink your life and looks to change the future; it is a spiritual engagement with life and people without the trappings of our modern society. I found that most pilgrims whatever colour, creed or nationality wanted the violence in the world to stop. Maybe a Pilgrims walk is what the world should be. Any returns from this book will be donated to prostate cancer research.
