King Edward VII School, 1965 - 1970, in Apartheid Johannesburg was a stick-wielding, traditional boys school of its times. But the Establishment did not count on a cohort that displayed an over-developed spirit of rebellion. In this unofficial, unauthorized and somewhat scandalous account, over 70 schoolmates used the Covid-19 lockdown to describe their complicated relationship with the institution that helped shape their lives over the last 50 years. This book examines the encounter between western and Asian models of public health and medicine in a range of East and Southeast Asian countries over the course of the twentieth century until now. It discusses the transfer of scientific knowledge of medicine and public health approaches from Europe and the United States to several Asian countries — Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, and China — and local interactions with, and transformations of, these public health models and approaches from the nineteenth century to the 1950s. Taking a critical look at assumptions about the objectiveness of science, the book highlights the use of scientific knowledge for political control, cultural manipulation, social transformation and economic needs. It rigorously and systematically investigates the historical developments of public health concepts, policies, institutions, and how these practices changed from colonial, to post-colonial and into the present day.

This book explains 'how to do' research on the early Malay doctors. a detailed account of the meaning of the word 'Malay' is given, in due recognition of the high status accorded to Malay Civilization in the Malay annals and Chinese chronicles. Forty-three early Malay doctors were traced over nine years in Malaya and Singapore. the techniques deployed to trace them are explained. the sources of their biographies are described, which include interviews, narratives, family accounts, newspapers, publications, and contacting their former institutions, friends and associations. Only a brief one-page biography for each doctor is included in this book. There are 30 appendices that contain tabulated information about these doctors, information about the early schools, medical institutions and hospitals at the time. This book is a resource guide on the early Malay doctors based on present research findings. More research efforts need to be channeled to find the remaining 12 early Malay doctors.
