This is the story of Karoly, a man whose family protected Katia and other Jewish refugees who were trying to escape the advance of Nazi Germany, from the west, and the advancing Russian's 'Red Army' and their Romanian allies, to the east; Karoly was a teenage boy who was used as human-shield by Romanian 'liberators' in Hungary. After the war, he was sent to prison while Hungary was under communist control. He was committed as a political prisoner for being a member of the Independent Small-holders Party, the communist party's only serious political rival. Under the communist regime, anyone who held authority in the community was a threat and Karoly was arrested under a trumped up charge. He was sent to Marianosztra where he was given the option of starvation or working as a miner in a forced labour camp. Karoly worked in a coalmine until he escaped the cruel communist regime in 1956. This is the story of a man who cheated death and suffered un-imaginable privations before escaping to England."

This is the story of a man who cheated death and suffered un-imaginable privations before escaping to England to start again from nothing, a broken and mentally enfeebled refugee who rebuilt his life through hard work and determination. Acknowledgements: My grateful thanks to all those involved in this project, including: Nick Dunne and Tom Gately. Particularly, I wanted to thank Karoly for reliving the horrors of the war and his time as a persecuted farmer and political prisoner during the communist occupation. Especially, I want to thank my wife, Suzi, and my two sons Alexander and Barnaby. The people of Hungary suffered, Karoly suffered, Katia suffered, The Jewish population of Budapest suffered; Hungary became part of the Holocaust. This must never happen again, in the name of communism, or capitalism, or for any idealism, in the name of any religion, to any country or any people."

Despairing, he hires a stenographer, Ann Snitkina, whose passionate determination urges him on to finish the book, saving his career. This true story of Dostoevsky's love affair with Anna Snitkina, the woman he later married is interwoven with scenes from his novella, The Gambler, as he dictates it.

What do you get when you add together a bottle of whiskey, a bad gambler, a flea-market wig, a plastic gun and a Hungarian bank? $5,900. And what do you get twenty-nine of these robberies later? The legend of the Whiskey Robber. When the Eastern bloc thawed, some extraordinary stories were revealed. But none is as entertaining as this. Attila Ambrus escaped late-eighties Romania for Hungary - but soon found that living on his wits wasn't getting him very far. Becoming goalie for a third-division ice hockey team brought no fortune and little glory, and his procession of moneymaking ruses fared little better - until he discovered robbery. With a supporting cast of car-wash owners, exotic dancers, drunk army generals and cocaine-snorting Hungarian rappers, Julian Rubinstein's tale is a spectacular debut, immortalizing the most charming outlaw since the Sundance Kid.

In this story of love and loss, Tibor Schroeder, a Christian and reservist in the Hungarian forces allied with Nazi Germany, and Hedy Weisz, a young Jewish woman meet and fall in love during the Second World War - a time when romantic liaisons and marriage between Christians and Jews were not only frowned upon but against the law. Not knowing of the dangers that await them, Tibor and Hedy pledge their lives to each only to be torn apart when Hedy and her family are herded into one Nagyszollos’ ghettoes. Twenty-five years pass before the lovers are finally reunited in Canada. Based on true events, this sprawling love story of hope, courage, and redemption will stay with readers long after finishing the book. A documentary, based on this story, from Postmodern Productions is scheduled for release in March 2009.
