This account of a trip up the Burma's Irrawaddy River provides an eye-witness description of the people and customs of the country in the year 1870. Wheeler was a secretary in the Foreign Department of British Burma, and his expedition, which visited ruined Pagan as well as Mandalay, took him into northern reaches of the country not yet incorporated into the Empire.
