Renaissance and Impressionist painting from the holdings of the acclaimed Omaha museum The first comprehensive reexamination of this Omaha museum's permanent collection in over three decades, European Paintings and Sculpture from Joslyn Art Museum marks a significant milestone for the institution and draws deserved attention to the artworks in its care. The museum's collection of European painting and sculpture includes masterworks by Titian, Paolo Veronese, Claude Lorrain, Rembrandt, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, as well as significant holdings of 19th-century French academic painting, with major examples by Jules Breton, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Despite the importance of this collection, previous publications have only addressed these works within a broader selection of museum highlights. The new catalog presents 100 artworks dating from the late 13th to the early 20th century and representing many of the most important artists, schools and styles of European art history.

"In the early nineteenth century, Prince Maximilian Of Wied traveled the length of the Missouri River on an excursion to uncover what he called "the natural face of North America"-its landscapes, flora and fauna, and particularly its Native inhabitants. Among his small party was the young Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), who would prove to be one of the most accomplished and prolific artists to visit the American frontier. Departing St. Louis in April 1833, Bodmer and Maximilian would travel over 2,500 miles through the heart of North America before reaching Fort McKenzie in present-day Montana, spending time among the Omaha, Otoe, and Pawnee; the Yankton and Santee Sioux; and the Assiniboines, Plains Cree, Blackfeet, Piegans, Bloods, and Gros Ventre. At their winter quarters at Fort Clark, they made intimate acquaintances among the Mandan and Hidatsa. Bodmer's watercolors, executed in the field and upon his return to Europe, remain one of the most perceptive and compelling visual accounts of the American West, and are an invaluable record of the Missouri River and its Indigenous communities at a pivotal historic moment. Drawn from Joslyn Art Museum's renowned Maximilian-Bodmer Collection, this is the first publication to focus on Bodmer as a portraitist. The catalog includes essays examining Bodmer's artistic practice within the context of nineteenth-century ethnography; the international dissemination of his images; and the ongoing significance of his work to Indigenous communities. "Engravings for the people" a fresh appraisal of the printmakers Currier & Ives and their vision of America Currier & Ives was a powerhouse of 19th-century publishing and had an immeasurable influence on American visual culture. Founded in New York in 1834 by Nathaniel Currier, the company expanded to include a new partner, James Merritt Ives, after 1857. Currier & Ives produced millions of affordably priced copies of over 7,000 original lithographs, living up to its self-appointed title as "The Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints." The firm took advantage of New York City's booming arts culture in the latter half of the 19th century, but its output was not seen as fine art by critics, nor was it intended as such. Its prints were first and foremost commodities; the choice subjects often determined by popularity and sales figures. Currier & Ives perpetuated Victorian ideals in its depictions of family, history, politics and urban and suburban life. But these prints also served as an important record of a nation in the midst of an extraordinary transformation from a rural and agricultural landscape to an industrialized and urbanized global power.
