Signed in text as Mr. Bowdoin. Sends his compliments, and asks Knox who will pay the debt owed him by Thomas Flucker's estate (Flucker was Knox's late father-in-law).

Writes to introduce Governor Bowdoin to Major [William] North, who is currently Inspector of Troops. Says that North wishes to be included in the line of troops being raised. Comments that he is a citizen of Massachusetts by birth and residence and that he is an honorable and worthy officer.

Introduces Captain [possibly Jeremiah or Constant] Freeman as a worthy artillery soldier who served under Knox during the previous war. Recommends him for service in the Massachusetts line currently being raised.

Addressed to My dear friend. Writes that he looked at all the newspapers relative to the claim of James Bowdoin on behalf of his late father Wm. Bowdoin but...found nothing among Mr. Flucker's accounts or papers. Encloses a paper in possession of Mr. James Bowdoin, and what I took from the paper delivered me by him what was in Mr. Flucker's handwriting [not present]. Hopes the legal impropriety will influence the commissioners to repeal it entirely. Continues to discuss business.

Writes that their friend Mr. [Nathaniel] Barrett, the bearer of the letter, is applying to the President for the position in the Consulate of France. Relates that Mr. Barrett lived in France as a merchant and would be well-suited for the position. Hopes that if Knox agrees that Mr. Barrett is a good match for the position, he will second the nomination.
