For 35 years (1971 to 2006), Arnold was an auditor with the U.S. Department of the Interior. His office audited the revenues, expenditures, and operations of the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands. From 1997 to 2001, Arnold also supervised Interior's audit office on the island of Guam. That office audited the finances of the Pacific islands that receive Federal grants. In this second in a series of Island Boy Photobooks, Arnold presents a visual tour of the Pacific islands with more than 340 stunning, full color photographs and 13 maps. This photobook includes stops in the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Palau, and the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The story continues through 70 years of family and island history, from 1910 to 1979. In the 1600s, Denmark established settlements on the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. They became known as the Danish West Indies. In the early days of World War I, the United States took a keen interest in the islands because of their location and the possibility they might fall under control of Germany. Denmark agreed to sell the islands to the United States and, on March 31, 1917, the Danish West Indies were officially transferred to the United States, becoming the U.S. Virgin Islands. Black & White Edition -- In the 1670s, a Dutch settler named Claudius van Beverhoudt arrived on St. Thomas, Danish West Indies. He married a woman named Elizabeth deWindt and made St. Thomas his home. Arnold van Beverhoudt, Jr. is a direct 8th generation descendant of Claudius and Elizabeth. His paternal grandparents, Ernest and Elisa, were living on St. Thomas in 1917 when the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands. They eventually moved to Venezuela, but Arnold's father remained on St. Thomas, where he became an auto repairman and raised his family. This book presents - in words and photos - Arnold's memories of life growing up and eventually meeting his "Island Girl" Helena on the tiny Caribbean island that its residents affectionately call "the Rock." It's a story that's been over 340 years in the making.

This book tackles photography’s role during Robert Louis Stevenson’s travels throughout the Pacific Island region and is the first study of his family’s previously unpublished photographs. Cutting across disciplinary boundaries, the book integrates photographs with letters, non-fiction, and poetry, and includes much unpublished material. The original readings of photographs and non-fiction highlight Stevenson’s engagement with colonial ideology and reality and advance new arguments about Victorian travel, settlement, and colonialisms in the Pacific. Like the Stevensons, the book moves from the Marquesas to the atolls of the Gilbert Islands in Micronesia; from the Kingdom of Hawai‘i’s political ambitions to Samoan plantations and the Stevensons’ settlement at Vailima.
