This paper examines the reasons for the changing status of Sea Ports. We will observe that intermediate points in transport chains linking Shipping with Road and Rail modes, ports are vulnerable to developments on both land and water. In the last decades these developments have been particularly significant, and gave rise to uncertainties and change that have made port planning extremely difficult. This paper offers suggestions on what ports must do to remain competitive as an industry in the modern world.
