Economic agents interact in structural relationships through time and space. This work starts from the empirical observation that all three dimensions, namely time, space, and structural functional forms, are important for an integrative framework of modern empirical analysis in regional science. The work thus aims at combining up-to-date econometric tools from the fields of spatial econometrics, panel time-series analysis and structural simultaneous equation modelling to analysis the different research questions at hand. Most of the topics dealt within this work start from a concrete empirical problem, while problem solving also aims at generating some new knowledge in a methodological way, e.g. by the complementary use of Monte Carlo simulation studies to compare the empirical performance of different estimators for specific data samples. Following a first introductory chapter, the work is structured in three parts addressing major issues in building up a stylized regional economic model such as interregional migration, factor and final demand estimation. All empirical applications use German regional data.

Zahlreiche Länder, so auch Deutschland, zeichnen sich durch ausgeprägte regionale Disparitäten auf dem Arbeitsmarkt aus. Regionalökonomische Studien liefern unterschiedlichste Ansätze, um die Existenz solcher Unterschiede zu erklären. Aber nur wenige Arbeiten geben Aufschluss über die Dynamik regionaler Arbeitsmarktdisparitäten: Nehmen diese im Zeitablauf zu, verringern sie sich oder bleiben sie stabil? Auch blenden die bisherigen Studien aus, welche Rolle Beschäftigtengruppen mit unterschiedlichem Qualifikationsniveau in diesem Prozess spielen. Die Arbeit von Daniel Werner schließt diese Lücken. Detailliert untersucht Werner zudem die Anpassungsprozesse nach regionalen Arbeitsmarktschocks. Sein Fazit: Die Mobilität der Arbeitskräfte - und hier insbesondere das Pendeln - ist der wichtigste Ausgleichsmechanismus.

This publication gathers the papers presented at the “OECD-EU dialogue on mobility and international migration: matching economic migration with labour market needs” (Brussels, 24-25 February 2014), a conference jointly organised by the European Commission and the OECD.

This book focuses on the latest advances and challenges in interregional migration research. Given the increase in the availability of "big data" at a finer spatial scale, the book discusses the resulting new challenges for researchers in interregional migration, especially for regional scientists, and the theoretical and empirical advances that have been made possible. In presenting these findings, it also sheds light on the different migration drivers and patterns in the developed and developing world by comparing different regions around the globe. The book updates and revisits the main academic debates in interregional migration, and presents new emerging lines of investigation and a forward-looking research agenda.

This contributed volume applies spatial and space-time econometric methods to spatial interaction modeling. The first part of the book addresses general cutting-edge methodological questions in spatial econometric interaction modeling, which concern aspects such as coefficient interpretation, constrained estimation, and scale effects. The second part deals with technical solutions to particular estimation issues, such as intraregional flows, Bayesian PPML and VAR estimation. The final part presents a number of empirical applications, ranging from interregional tourism competition and domestic trade to space-time migration modeling and residential relocation.
