The three-volume project Cohesion in Multi-Ethnic Societies in Europe from c.1000 to the Present explores and seeks to find solutions to a crucial problem facing contemporary Europe: in what circumstances can different ethnic groups co-operate for the common good? They apparently did so in the past, combining to form political societies, medieval and early modern duchies, kingdoms, and empires. But did they maintain their ethnic traditions in this process? Did they pass on elements of their cultural memory when they were not in a dominant position in a given polity? The first volume of the project explored written sources about the past to show how communities shaped their collective memories in order to ensure the smooth functioning of multi-ethnic political communities. This second volume looks beyond texts and focuses on activities and events that were designed to build a sense of community within a political community made up of different ethnic groups. The coexistence of different ethnic groups is considered not through the prism of theoretical analyses by intellectual elites, but by following community members' responses to current events as recorded in the sources.

This book examines ethnic communities, identity, economy, society and state, and the links between them, in a range of countries across Asia, challenging the widely held belief that an authoritarian political system is necessary to ensure communal co-existence in developing countries where ethnic minorities have a considerable economic presence.

South-East Asia is one of the most complex regions in the world as far as ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity is concerned with an extremely rich ancient and contemporary history. Because of this, it offers an exceptionally rich field of study for inter-ethnic relations. This book examines interethnic relationships between groups and the dynamics of exchange networks throughout Asia and includes case studies based in Vietnam, Burma, Laos, Nepal, China, and Siberia. The innovative aspect of this book lies in the fact that the contributors examine relationships between groups and the dynamics of exchange networks across Asia rather than ethnic groups studied in isolation. Rendering the important moments of daily life of ethnic groups and focussing on the exchanges between groups sharing a specific social space, this approach, today still rarely used in Asian anthropology, allows systems of exchange to emerge and for us to understand the systems of power and local leadership from the inside out. Inter-Ethnic Dynamics in Asia will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian culture and society, ethnicity and regional anthropology.

This volume is based on papers presented on ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations in Hungary and The Netherlands, which were presented and discussed in three conferences and a series of meetings from 1997-1999. This work builds on comparative studies of the rise of a radical right and the mobilization of anti-immigrant feelings. It presents cross-national comparative research, due to the creedence that shifting national angles is a powerful strategic tool with which to correct national bias and to uncover submerged or overlooked aspects of specific national cases. The book brings together contributions from Hungarian and Dutch scholars in the field of ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations. The two countries are used as exemplary cases of distinct ethno-political patterns in Central and Western Europe. Combining complementary configurational and dimensional approaches to cross-national comparison, the diverse forms of ethnic relations in Hungary and The Netherlands are analyzed, and competing explanations of ethno-political conflict (or co-ordination) are tested in both national contexts.
