Sensor networks comprise of a number of sensors installed across a spatially distributed network, which gather information and periodically feed a central server with the measured data. The server monitors the data, issues possible alarms and computes fast aggregates. As data analysis requests may concern both present and past data, the server is forced to store the entire stream. But the limited storage capacity of a server may reduce the amount of data stored on the disk. One solution is to compute summaries of the data as it arrives, and to use these summaries to interpolate the real data. This work introduces a recently defined spatio-temporal pattern, called trend cluster, to summarize, interpolate and identify anomalies in a sensor network. As an example, the application of trend cluster discovery to monitor the efficiency of photovoltaic power plants is discussed. The work closes with remarks on new possibilities for surveillance enabled by recent developments in sensing technology.

The rapidly growing volume of available digital documents of various formats and the possibility to access these through Internet-based technologies, have led to the necessity to develop solid methods to properly organize and structure documents in large digital libraries and repositories. Due to the extremely large volumes of documents and to their unstructured form, most of the research efforts in this direction are dedicated to automatically infer structure and schemas that can help to better organize huge collections of documents and data. This book covers the latest advances in structure inference in heterogeneous collections of documents and data. The book brings a comprehensive view of the state-of-the-art in the area, presents some lessons learned and identifies new research issues, challenges and opportunities for further research agenda and developments. The selected chapters cover a broad range of research issues, from theoretical approaches to case studies and best practices in the field. Researcher, software developers, practitioners and students interested in the field of learning structure and schemas from documents will find the comprehensive coverage of this book useful for their research, academic, development and practice activity.

Database and information systems technologies have been rapidly evolving in several directions over the past years. New types and kinds of data, new types of applications and information systems to support them raise diverse challenges to be addressed. The so-called big data challenge, streaming data management and processing, social networks and other complex data analysis, including semantic reasoning into information systems supporting for instance trading, negotiations, and bidding mechanisms are just some of the emerging research topics. This volume contains papers contributed by six workshops: ADBIS Workshop on GPUs in Databases (GID 2012), Mining Complex and Stream Data (MCSD'12), International Workshop on Ontologies meet Advanced Information Systems (OAIS'2012), Second Workshop on Modeling Multi-commodity Trade: Data models and processing (MMT'12), 1st ADBIS Workshop on Social Data Processing (SDP'12), 1st ADBIS Workshop on Social and Algorithmic Issues in Business Support (SAIBS), and the Ph.D. Consortium associated with the ADBIS 2012 conference that report on the recent developments and an ongoing research in the aforementioned areas.
