This booklet describes, in a non-technical manner, some important aspects of FAO Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries No. 3 dealing with the integration of fisheries into coastal area management. This booklet does not replace Technical Guidelines No. 3 but simply presents some of the complex information contained in this guideline in a more simplified form so as to make it more accessible.

A growing number of countries are engaged in preparing and implementing maritime spatial plans: however, questions are emerging from the growing body of MSP experience. How can maritime spatial planning deal with a complex and dynamic environment such as the sea? How can MSP be embedded in multiple levels of governance across regional and national borders – and how far does the environment benefit from this new approach?
