Excerpt from Practical Lessons in Physical Measurement Value Of the facts revealed by those methods. The book deals only with measurements of length, mass, and time, and with such Of these measurements as are Of the most elementary kind; but small as is the region Of knowledge explored, and simple as the plan Of the book may seem, the methods employed and taught therein are those which will be called into play in any research, however abstruse, which the student may hereafter undertake. Excerpt from Electric and Magnetic Measurements and Measuring Instruments The following volume has been written for the use of those who have to do with electrical and magnetic measurements in one form or another, and as these must be made in practically all branches of the profession, from the simple testing out of lines and resistances to the most elaborate determination of designs, it is hoped that its Sphere of usefulness will be quite large. The subjects have, throughout, been approached with a View toward their use by users, not manufacturers, of measuring apparatus, that is to say the book is in no sense intended as a treatise on the design and construction of instruments, the circle interested being decidedly limited. Descriptions are, however, given of apparatus as well as of methods of test, because knowl edge of the manner in which a principle is utilized in concrete instruments often suggests, to one having a determination to make but is at the same time without the particular form of appliance ordinarily employed for that purpose, means of adap ing thereto some other device which is at hand. Further, in illustrating examples of instruments for different kinds of work, there has been in mind the idea that these will enable engineers to decide, with the aid of their general engineering knowledge, which are the best suited to their particular requirements. Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Measurements The close attention to every detail and the exercise of deliberate judgment which are required in every experiment if a worthy result is to be obtained, tend to produce a habit of accuracy which is of inestimable value. This training is obtained only when every effort is made to get the very best result that the time allowed for the experiment and the apparatus employed will permit. Before observations on any experiment are begun, the theory of the experiment should be mastered as well as the functions of the various parts of the apparatus which is to be used. Without such study, necessary observations may be omitted or taken in the wrong way, and apparatus whose value depends upon its accuracy may be injured permanently because of a lack of knowl edge about its delicate parts. Furthermore it is important to determine the degree of accuracy of every result which is obtained. Errors - For various reasons it is impossible to obtain the absolute value of an unknown quantity. Any measurement is affected, to a greater or less extent, by errors which may be classified under the two heads: constant and accidental. As examples of constant errors may be mentioned the following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Introduction to Physical Measurements: With Appendices on Absolute Electrical Measurement, Etc The author, in the preface to the second German edition, gives a sketch of the purposes which he hopes that the present book will serve. He says, a truth which all experience confirms, that the mere verbal teaching of physical laws is seldom of much use, tending frequently merely to confuse the student; while the simple performance of an experiment gives him confidence in himself and in the laws he is investigating, and leads him, by means of measurements which can be independently verified, to that knowledge of his powers which is so important when he has to do any original work. Since the greater part of the treatise is devoted to measurements of physical quantities, we have thought its object better expressed by the title we have given it than by a literal translation of the German one. Descriptions of apparatus are but rarely given, as students mostly have instruments provided for them, and seldom have to make their own apparatus, or to put it together. The mathematical knowledge required is but very elementary, as the proofs of the formulae are only given when they present no complex arguments.
