LE TRAVAIL QUE NOUS PRESENTONS EST UNE SIMULATION NUMERIQUE DES PHENOMENES THERMOCONVECTIFS ET THERMOSOLUTAUX DANS UNE CAVITE BIDIMENSIONNELLE FERMEE. LES FLUIDES CONSIDERES ONT UNE VISCOSITE VARIANT EN FONCTION DE LA TEMPERATURE. LES EQUATIONS DE CONSERVATION, DANS L'HYPOTHESE DE BOUSSINESQ, SONT ECRITES DANS LA FORMULATION FONCTION DE COURANT ET TOURBILLON. CECI PERMET L'UTILISATION DE LA COMBINAISON DE DEUX SCHEMAS AUX DIFFERENCES FINIES, L'UN PRECIS A L'ORDRE QUATRE POUR RESOUDRE L'EQUATION DE POISSON, L'AUTRE PRECIS A L'ORDRE DEUX EN ESPACE ET EN TEMPS POUR RESOUDRE LES EQUATIONS DE TRANSPORT. LE SYSTEME D'EQUATIONS LINEARISE EN TEMPS EST RESOLU PAR LA METHODE DES DIRECTIONS ALTERNEES IMPLICITES TANT POUR LES EQUATIONS PARABOLIQUES QU'ELLIPTIQUE. LES ECOULEMENTS DECRITS SONT CARACTERISES PAR DES GRANDS NOMBRES DE RAYLEIGH ET DE PRANDTL ET PRESENTENT DES REGIONS A FORTS GRADIENTS. UN TRAITEMENT DES TERMES CONVECTIFS DANS L'EQUATION DE TRANSPORT DE LA TEMPERATURE AVEC LE SCHEMA Q.U.I.C.K PERMET DE REDUIRE LES OSCILLATIONS, METTANT EN EVIDENCE UN MANQUE DE RESOLUTION SPATIALE. LES MAILLAGES LACHES PERMETTRONT DE REDUIRE LES TEMPS DE CALCUL AINSI QUE L'UTILISATION DE PAS DE TEMPS MOINS RESTRICTIFS. NOUS PRESENTONS AUSSI UNE ETUDE DE LA CRISTALLISATION D'UN FLUIDE BINAIRE CONVECTIF. LA CONFIGURATION DECRITE REPRESENTE L'AVANCEE D'UN FRONT HORIZONTAL DONT LA POSITION EST CALCULEE A PARTIR DES LOIS DE CONSERVATION INTERFACIALES ET DELIMITANT LES DEUX DOMAINES FLUIDE ET SOLIDE. ELLE PERMET DE DEGAGER DES RESULTATS QUALITATIFS QUANT AU ROLE JOUE PAR LA STRATIFICATION THERMIQUE SUR LA STABILITE DE LA COUCHE LIMITE SOLUTALE PRODUITE PAR CRISTALLISATION. CETTE ETUDE EST MENEE POUR DIFFERENTES VALEURS DU NOMBRE DE RAYLEIGH SOLUTAL ET DE LA TEMPERATURE DU LIQUIDUS

The impact of Benard's discovery on 20th century physics is crucial to any modern research area such as fluid dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, just to name a few. This centenary review shows the broad scope and development including modern applications, edited and written by experts in the field.

The General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in its meeting on August 28, 1994, selected for 1996 only four Mechanics Symposia, of which ours is the only one related to Fluid Mechanics: Variable Density Low Speed Turbulent Flows. This IUTAM Symposium, organized by the Institut de Recherche sur les Phenomenes Hors Equilibre (Marseille), is the logical continuation of the meetings previously organized or co-organized - on the French or European level, such as Euromech 237, Marseille, 1988 - by the same research group ofMarseille. This meeting focused specifically on the structure of turbulent flows in which density varies strongly : the effect of this variation on the velocity and scalar fields is in no sense negligible. We were mainly concerned with low-speed flows subjected to strong local changes of density as a consequence of heat or mass transfer or of chemical reactions. Compressible turbulent flows - such a!" supersonic ones - were also considered in order to underline their similarities to and their differences from low-speed variable density flows.

This book looks at the circulation features of the Southern Hemisphere, both for the atmosphere and oceans. It includes observational techniques based on satellites, anchored and drifting buoys, and the research carried out at research stations in the Southern Hemisphere. The book was originally published in 1972 by the American Meteorological Society. It has been revised and updated in 1999, following the expansion of research bases and the development of research in the region at the time.
