This book contains 20 chapters, which are divided into 5 sections. Section 1 covers different aspects of insecticide resistance of selected economically important plant insect pests, whereas section 2 includes chapters about the importance, development and insecticide resistance management in controlling malaria vectors. Section 3 is dedicated to some general questions in insecticide resistance, while the main topic of section 4 is biochemical approaches of insecticide resistance mechanisms. Section 5 covers ecologically acceptable approaches for overcoming insecticide resistance, such are the use of mycoinsecticides, and understanding the role of some plant chemical compounds, which are important in interactions between plants, their pests and biological control agents.

This short, readable textbook is designed to introduce students the biology and techniques of aricultural pest and disease vector control and management. As such, it is unique; no other book attempts to marry together the fields of pest and vector control. The authors are two of the leading authorities in their respective fields and amongst the best known entomologists of their generation.

The meeting objectives included providing an overview of the current status of insecticide resistance and resistance management practices, as well as of the ways in which economic principles can be applied to value insecticide susceptibility. The main target audiences were National Malaria Control Programs, their implementing partner organizations and donors.

Vector-borne diseases are major causes of sickness, disability and death worldwide. These diseases are caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses transmitted by various vectors, including mosquitoes, sandflies, fleas, ticks, lice and others. Insecticides form an essential part of vector control, the most widely used and effective strategy to reduce the burden of these diseases. Knowledge of vector resistance to insecticides is therefore crucial for the selection of effective vector control interventions. This document provides guidance on how to assess insecticide resistance in mosquito vectors and is aimed at field entomologists and biologists within ministries of health or partner institutions. It is also directed at programme managers and others in charge of designing and implementing vector control strategies who need to draw on resistance data to inform their decisions. Lastly, it can help researchers and the pesticide industry to assess, in a standardized way, vector resistance to compounds used in existing and new vector control products. It supersedes the “Test procedures for insecticide resistance monitoring in malaria vector mosquitoes, 2nd ed.” published in 2016.
