This volume contains the proceedings of the USA-Japan Joint Seminar on "Fracture Mechanics of Ductile and Tough Materials and Its Applications to Energy Related Structures". The seminar was supported jointly by the National Science Foundation of the United States and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences. The seminar was held from November 12th to 16th, 1979, at Hayama, Japan, a picturesque resort town by the beach of Sagami Bay facing Mt. Fugi. The safety and integrity of the engineering structures for energy explora tion, energy production, and energy transportation are of utmost importance to our welfare. Both the United States and Japan are at the forefront of the re search on fracture mechanics and its applications to fracture prevention. Dur ing the past few years, major research efforts have been made in the areas of non-linear fracture mechanics and its applications to fracture initiation, slow crack growth, creep and fatigue. This joint seminar offered an unique opportunity for detailed exchange of information on current researches and fu ture efforts.

Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.

artensite forms under rapid cooling of austenitic grains accompanied by a change of the crystal lattice. Large deformations are induced which lead to plastic dislocations. In this work a transformation model based on the sharp interface theory, set in a finite strain context is developed. Crystal plasticity effects, the kinetic of the singular surface as well as a simple model of the inheritance from austenite dislocations into martensite are accounted for.

This book focuses on a particular class of models (namely Multi-Mechanism models) and their applications to extensive experimental data base related to different kind of materials. These models (i) are able to describe the main mechanical effects in plasticity, creep, creep/plasticity interaction, ratcheting extra-hardening under non-proportional loading (ii) provide local information (such us local stress/strain fields, damage, ….). A particular attention is paid to the identification process of material parameters. Moreover, finite element implementation of the Multi-Mechanism models is detailed.
