Rich in period analysis, here is fascinating historical perspective covering 250 years of existence primarily of a 1750 Spanish settlement originally called Villa del Seor San Ignacio de Loyola de Revilla and now known as "Guerrero Viejo." Although many books cover the genealogical aspects of families that originated in this city, the historical contributions of the early pioneers, their descendents, and the controversy related to land grants, called Porciones -- awarded by the King of Spain -- have, for the most part, remained in the background. This, then, is the principal objective of this book. The book provides summaries on the evolution, history, wars, and problems of Mexico. Using some of his ancestors as a sample, the author shows the hardships they endured and discusses their contribution in the formation of the two great nations that the United States and Mexico have become. At the same time, the book shows that the land grants (and heirs) took one of two alternate roads -- depending on their location -- when Texas and other territories were ceded to the United States. People and land grants located on the Mexican side were victims of the violent and blood soaked history that Mexico has had. On the other hand, those located on the U.S. side, were subjected to mischief and flagrant violations of the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Sadly, in 1953, the Falcon Dam inundated Guerrero Viejo and many of the land grants. Thus, for all intents and purposes, the heirs of most land grants met the same end and a financial obligation (of $193.0 Million plus interest) exchanged between the U.S. and Mexico has remained unpaid for over 80 years. The reader will long-remember the amazing facts developed in this book.

The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge lies on the northern bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas, about seventy miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico. In Border Sanctuary, M.J. Morgan uncovers how 2,000 acres of rare subtropical riparian forest came to be preserved in a region otherwise dramatically altered by human habitation. The story she tells begins and ends with the efforts of the Rio Grande Valley Nature Club to protect one of the last remaining stopovers for birds migrating north from Central and South America. In between, she reconstructs a two hundred-year human and environmental history of the original “two square leagues” of the Santa Ana land grant and of the Mexican and Tejano families who lived on, worked, and ultimately helped preserve this forest on the river’s edge. At a time in our history where the Spanish Mexican roots of this great place we call Texas are being questioned, this third volume of selected essays is most timely. For example, if Texas history begins in 1836 as implied in mainstream Texas history, why then is everything historically old (towns, roads, rivers, mountain ranges, regions, etc.) named in Spanish? Our ancestors’ legacy is why we have a right to practice our heritage year-round; not just during Hispanic History Month. Importantly, the network of vibrant communities in New Spain connected by the Camino Real are indeed what first attracted U.S. Anglo Saxon and Northern European immigrants to Texas and the west. In remembering our ancestors, “Aquí todavía estamos, y no nos vamos”. (Here we still are and we’re not leaving.)

This book offers a different perspective than that found in mainstream US and Texas history because it acquaints readers with pre-1836 people, places, and events. The title Friendly Betrayal aims to capture the Spanish Mexican Texans disappointment when they (1) first welcomed US immigrants to Mexico (Texas) as fellow Mexicans and (2) how (after 1836) the growing Anglo Saxon majority treated our ancestors as foreigners in their own homeland. Part I contains a fictionalized storyline that delves into the initial blending of Native American and Spanish European cultures that produced todays mestizo people. Due to their genetic cultural (not political) ties to Mexico, this group (generally called Mexican Americans in the United States) continues to strongly maintain, defend, and preserve their unique identity, history, and heritage on this side of the border.
