The book is arranged alphabetically by surname, and lists approximately 64,000 heads-of-households. The information was gleaned from National Archives microfilm, and, where names were illegible on the microfilmed copy, the original census schedules were consulted. The four counties of Craven, Greene, New Hanover, and Wake are not included in this index since the original schedules for these counties are missing.
