This book presents innovative and high-quality research regarding advanced decision support systems (DSSs). It describes the foundations, methods, methodologies, models, tools, and techniques for designing, developing, implementing and evaluating advanced DSSs in different fields, including finance, health, emergency management, industry and pollution control. Decision support systems employ artificial intelligence methods to heuristically address problems that are cannot be solved using formal techniques. In this context, technologies such as the Semantic Web, linked data, big data, and machine learning are being applied to provide integrated support for individuals and organizations to make more rational decisions. The book is organized into two parts. The first part covers decision support systems for industry, while the second part presents case studies related to clinical emergency management and pollution control.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the following 8 International Workshops: OTM Academy; OTM Industry Case Studies Program; Enterprise Integration, Interoperability, and Networking, EI2N; International Workshop on Fact Based Modeling 2015, FBM; Industrial and Business Applications of Semantic Web Technologies, INBAST; Information Systems, om Distributed Environment, ISDE; Methods, Evaluation, Tools and Applications for the Creation and Consumption of Structured Data for the e-Society, META4eS; and Mobile and Social Computing for collaborative interactions, MSC 2015. These workshops were held as associated events at OTM 2015, the federated conferences "On The Move Towards Meaningful Internet Systems and Ubiquitous Computing", in Rhodes, Greece, in October 2015. The 55 full papers presented together with 3 short papers and 2 popsters were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 100 submissions. The workshops share the distributed aspects of modern computing systems, they experience the application pull created by the Internet and by the so-called Semantic Web, in particular developments of Big Data, increased importance of security issues, and the globalization of mobile-based technologies.

This comprehensive guide will teach you how to build an income statement semantic model, also known as the profit and loss (P&L) statement. Author Chris Barber— a business intelligence (BI) consultant, Microsoft MVP, and chartered accountant (ACMA, CGMA)—helps you master everything from designing conceptual models to building semantic models based on these designs. You will learn how to build a re-usable solution based on the trial balance and how to expand upon this to build enterprise-grade solutions. If you want to leverage the Microsoft BI platform to understand profit within your organization, this is the resource you need. What You Will Learn Modeling and the income statement: Learn what modelling the income statement entails, why it is important, and how income statements are constructed Calculating account balances: Learn how to optimally calculate account balances using a Star Schema Producing external income statement semantic models: Learn how to produce external income statement semantic models as they enable income statements to be analyzed from a range of perspectives and can be explored to reveal the underlying accounts and journal entries Producing internal income statement semantic models: Learn how to create multiple income statement layouts and further contextualize financial information by including percentages and non-financial information, and learn about the various security and self-service considerations Who This Book Is For Technical users (solution architects, Microsoft Fabric developers, Power BI developers) who require a comprehensive methodology for income statement semantic models because of the modeling complexities and knowledge needed of the accounting process; and finance (management accountants) who have hit the limits of Excel and have started using Power BI, but are unsure how income statement semantic models are built

Supporting competitive business analysis of financial reports through the automated analysis and interpretation of their natural language sections, presents specific challenges including information that can be ambiguous, camouflaged, or tacitly hidden within the narrative. These sections present terminology and structural challenges for information extraction that require the application of linguistic and heuristic based domain modelling to identify the information requirement. This thesis investigates a modelling approach that incrementally builds the business analysts information requirement as a series of Semantic Paths grounded in domain linguistic and user heuristics. A Competitive Analysis Ontology (CAO) is defined to provide semantic representation of the information requirement necessary to drive linguistic analysis and information extraction. The evaluation of the CAO within the financial sub-domain of competitive analysis is investigated, through the development of the Analyst Work Bench (AWB), is presented. The AWB linguistically analyses a Form 10-Q’s disclosure sections, automatically populates the CAO and provides the analyst’s information requirement. The AWB leverages the CAO Semantic Paths for information search and extraction capability, to support an analyst perform a competitive analysis, with reduced manual effort. Evaluation based on design-science principles, use methods from information retrieval and information system success to determine CAO performance and usability. A controlled experiment that compares competitive analysis performance using the AWB, against its manual performed equivalent, reported a 37% performance increase using the AWB to identify relevant information. Usability evaluation further found that CAO use contributed to task structuring, and structured information provision in a manner that directly supported task performance.
