A true story, leaving his family in South Africa in 1972, Shimon travels to Israel. He plans to learn the language, sleep with as many gorgeous girls as possible, join the army, and live for the day. But a chance encounter with a beguiling woman on the bus impacts his future far more than he could have imagined. Shimon understands that at this time in history, as long as there are terrorists, Israel will never sleep in peace; it is a nation always fighting for survival. Fit and fast, he earns high praise from his superiors in the army; his personality and skills make him a perfect candidate for becoming an agent with the Shin Bet Israels Security Agency, a position where life and death situations are routine. Telling a tale of action, adventure, deception, and romance, The Apple Orchard follows Shimon as he works covertly with Shin Bet to protect the religious freedoms in the Holy Land of Israel. The enemy fears Shimon and women love him, but his love for his country is the greatest love affair of them all.

Yitzhak Berger advances a distinctive and markedly original interpretation of the biblical book of Jonah that resolves many of the ambiguities in the text. Berger contends that the Jonah text pulls from many inner-biblical connections, especially ones relating to the Garden of Eden. These connections provide a foundation for Berger's reading of the story, which attributes multiple layers of meaning to this carefully crafted biblical book. Focusing on Jonah's futile quest and his profoundly troubled response to God's view of the sins of humanity, Berger shows how the book paints Jonah as a pacifist no less than as a moralist.

This study examines the material evidence for synagogues and churches in the Holy Land from the age of Constantine in the fourth century CE to the Arab conquest of the eastern provinces in the seventh century CE. Whereas scholars once viewed the growth of the Byzantine empire as time of persecution, a re-evaluation of the archaeological evidence indicates that Jews prospered along with their Christian neighbours. What influence did Christian art and architecture have on ancient synagogues? In the sixth century, one-third of all known synagogues in Palestine bear features similar to early Byzantine churches: basilical layouts, mosaic floors, apses, and chancel screens. Focusing on these features sheds light on how Jewish communities met the challenges posed by the Church’s development into a major religious and political power. This book provides a critical analysis of the archaeological evidence as a basis for our better understanding of Jewish identity and community in late Antique Palestine.
