Innocence turns to compulsion and can't stop. In the Shadow of Sin: The Confessions of a Sex Addict is a novel tackling the elephant in the room in 2017. Sexual addiction is THE addiction of the 21st century. Many people doubt it is real. After reading this book, you'll have no doubt as you watch Tom's descent into Hell. Tom Raines, a shy boy from a small Southern town, grows up in a fundamentalist church filled with hatred and hellfire. Something goes very wrong. At age fifteen, he is rescued by an older woman who shatters his concept of sex and love to the point where sex becomes love. All he wants in life is for someone to love him unconditionally, but he finds himself in many relationships, searching for a woman who won't knock him off his pedestal, often within the confines of marriage. This search for love proves to be his undoing as he becomes his worst enemy. Now he must overcome his guilt by making better choices about his role in his failed marriages, or end up lonely, lost, or dead.

I learned much about myself writing this book. It is why the first subtitle is, "a journey of self-discovery," including confessions of my "sex addiction," significant enough to rate the second subtitle. I reveal truths about myself that no one knew about me, including me - until I had to accept them to be able to publicly admit them. To write this took a lot of gut-wrenching soul-searching. You will read in the preface that I dictated my book because I can't type due to my stroke, employing the amazing Dragon (Nuance} naturally speaking speech recognition software, and I list the other factors enabling the me to write it.

"Dr. Patrick Carnes is a creative, pioneering, and courageous human being. His books are changing the lives of thousands!" "I lost three marriages, all because of affairs." "I became suicidal because of multiple intense involvements." "I spent money on sex when I needed it for children's clothes." "I lost promotion opportunities and a special scholarship because my co-workers found out about my sex life." Every day they face the possibility of destruction, risking their families, fiances, jobs, dignity, and health. They come from all walks of life: ministers, physicians, therapists, politicians, executives, blue-collar workers. Most were abused as children--sexually, physically or emotionally--and saw addictive behavior in their early lives. Most grapple with other addictions as well, but their fiercest battle is with the most astounding prevalent "secret" disorder in America: sexual addiction. Here is a ground-breaking work by the nation's leading professional expert on sexual addiction, based on the candid testimony of more than one thousand recovering sexual addicts in the first major scientific study of the disorder. This essential volume includes not only the revealing findings of Dr. Carne's research with recovering addicts but also advice from the addicts and co-addicts themselves as they work to overcome their compulsive behavior. Positive, hopeful, and practical, Don't Call It Love is a landmark book that helps us better understand all addictions, their causes, and the difficult path to recovery.
